S.M.A.R.T failure predicted

Hello,

looking for some advice here.. I moved from UK to Norway, so getting hardware is actually somewhat hard compared to how spoilt I was in the UK with my nextday delivery, and abundance of online CHEAP stores.

Couple of days ago, BIOS alerted me via S.M.A.R.T of a predicted failure, backup and replace immediately. Fair enough, I've gone ahead and mirrored the drive in question and I'm ready for it to fail.

From HD Sentinel:

Failure Predicted - Attribute: 1 Raw Read Error Rate, Errors occurred while reading raw data from a disk. Indicate problem with the disk surface or the read/write heads.
There are 825 weak sectors found on the disk surface. They may be remapped any time in the later use of the disk.
Replace hard disk immediately.

It is recommended to backup immediately to prevent data loss.

I've had this drive powered on for a total of 366 days and 10 hours. It's fair to say, I've owned it for maybe 1 and a half years now. The question is, can anyone give me a guess as to when and if it will fail in the very near future? I've read in some threads that one raw read error isn't enough, and so forth. However, I've had a lot of CRC errors lately. Defragged, CHKDSK many times but the drive doesn't seem to be doing all that well, for obvious reasons! If anyone has some insight into when it might fail, how fast I need to get a replacement and so forth I'd be very thankful!

I just have no idea how serious it is, and if it can live on for another month or two or if it's an immediate replacement.

Thanks!

I usually get a new one as soon as I can not to lose any data, but on a crappy Samsung HDD from my laptop, I have managed to make it last another month or so before it was useless.

Could you post an HDTune or Defraggler screenshot? (Health tabs) Both are free programs.

Raw SMART info is more useful to us for diagnosis than HD Sentinel's interpretation.

Hmm... I'd be surprised if it lasted a month. Mine died within days of getting this bad:

hdtunehealth101123.png

The Data column is the one to pay attention to in HDTune, or "Real Value" in Defraggler.

822 pending sectors is very high. Read Error Rate and Multi-Zone Error Rate can also be bad depending on whether the drive reports useful info there. (Some do, some don't.)

Either way, with that many errors... all you can really do is run chkdsk /r C: (assumine it's C:\) and hope it can avoid the bad sectors. It's going to get worse, and eventually it won't even start up. In my case it took about two days, but yours may last longer. Some drives only croak once they hit a couple thousand.

Hello!

I am borrowing this topic because I have a similar problem here. Two days ago i got a "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." error and i couldn't get to Windows anymore. I tried many recovery ways to get it working but none worked so I was forced to reinstall windows. Right after installation i got Windows warning that there is a serious HDD error and should back up my files. I downloaded HD Sentinel and got the same message as original poster. I also scanned my HD with Defraggler and here are the results:

This is my first post here but I would much appreciate if somebody could take a quick look at the results and predict how serious those errors are since im a complete computer nub smile.gif. My disc is still in varranty, is there a chance i get it replaced? I run wondows 7 ultimate.

If there's anything else i should mention, please let me know.

Thanks a lot!

best to contact samsung about warranty. If you can get a new/refurb in better condition for little or no cash why not? Hard drives are a ticking time bomb and exact predictions are tough. But you just formatted and started over so i'm guessing you won't be missing much if you leave it in there. Just back up often
