FPS Issue

Thread Starter
I'm having a problem with my fps in Diablo 3. It randomly decides to lock my fps in at 30 and the game gets extremely laggy. This happened to me before playing league of legends on 275 drivers but when I installed my ssd and got the newest drivers the issue was resolved. So what are the best drivers right now and how do I uninstall my current drivers so I can install the new drivers? Can you please provide a link to the drivers I should use.

Goto Nividia's Website (www.Nvidia.com) download drivers and choose the newest available (301.42), when the drivers are installing you will have an option to 'clean install' your drivers which will ensure any corrupt entities will be removed.

After your drivers are installed play the game with vsync off and see if you are experiencing any FPS capping.

Oh.  In the NVIDIA Control Panel, click "System Information" on the bottom-left corner of the window.  In the thing that comes up, there's a white area with some information.  The first thing listed is the driver version.

My guess is that if you're using a 300-series driver, then you may need to switch to a 28x.xx or 29x.xx driver.  The 300 series are the first ones to begin including support for all of the GeForce 600 Series GPUs, and I think that this makes these drivers a little worse for some us GeForce 500 Series owners.  Not all of us, but just some of us.

However, this reminds me of what happens to me in Crysis 2:  every single time I play, I have to Alt+Tab out and back in before I actually begin playing because otherwise I don't get liquid-smooth performance.

If you want to switch to a different driver version, then I can show you a very good way to do it.

Oh, I am using 290.53. Thats what I have to do for Diablo 3, I alt+tab out and play a youtube video and pause it and go back in becuase it isnt liquid-smooth like u said, its choppy as hell. Is the way mention above to begin installing the drivers and unistalling the current drivers not a good way?

I guess it's an ok way, but this method feels more thorough or something:

  1. Uninstall the driver from the Programs and Features Control Panel
  2. After it's finished reboot into Safe Mode.  Note:  the only way I can get into Safe Mode with my P8P67 is by configuring msconfig for it first.
  3. Once in Safe Mode, open Driver Sweeper (it can be downloaded from here)
  4. Select "NVIDIA - Display"
  5. Click "Clean"
  6. Reboot when it asks you if you want to (it's time to go back to normal Windows mode)
  7. Install the driver you want to switch to (and use the "Clean Install" option of course just for good measure - and deselect things you don't need, like perhaps the HD Audio Driver and Stereoscopic 3D)

If it keeps requiring an Alt+Tab, then I dunno; I'd say that it may have to be considered normal.

For me though, I don't have to do anything when I Alt+Tab.  I just Alt+Tab out and then back in.  Actually, in Crysis 2 it doesn't even go "out".  It just switches to Windowed Mode and Alt+Tab brings me back to full screen.  So I think it's not necessary to do anything in between the two Alt+Tabs.

I used to use this method on my laptop before nvidia offered the clean install support in their installation package. Nowadays, I would only recommend using that method if one is encountering issues. There is no harm in using this method. Generally newer drivers are optimized for newer games (and newer GPUs as mentioned before). My personal recommendation is to try the newest drivers, and if you encounter issues to move to an older driver from there. I'm just giving you options here.

I dunno.  I mean, maybe your solution will be to try the latest driver version.  It's one of those Your Mileage May Vary things.  :/

I don't blame you for not wanting to go through those steps.  When I discovered that holding F8 doesn't get me into Safe Mode because of this motherboard, I began to no longer enjoy posting these steps for people with similar boards!

The "Clean Install" option doesn't do what Driver Sweeper does.  It's better than nothing, but Driver Sweeper is still far more thorough.  ;)

Anyway, I'm not saying there's harm in not using Driver Sweeper, but it is good peace of mind knowing that it's a clean and fresh start each time.
