Mobo: EVGA SR-2
CPU: Intel XEON 5650 x2
PSU: Silverstone 1500w (using maybe 1k max at full load)
all power cables were double checked, none are loose or melting.
CPU and video card never went past 35°C under load
OS drive is a 120GB Corsair Force GT on SATA 6G
other drive includes 2TB Hitachi (75% full), and 2x Intel 40GB SSD for games. The 2 SSD are not in RAID
I have what seems to be a perplexing memory problem. Memtest86+ (bootable CD) passes with no trouble but Windows does show problem. It should show 24GB (12x2GB) but it shows only 22GB, and when it does show 24GB sometimes I get BSoD with 0x00000124 error code. Once Windows reported the problem and suggested I contact HP but the only HP product I have is a non working printer sitting around waiting to get tossed out. AFAIK I got no HP driver or HP software on my system so I have no idea why Windows think HP should help me.
The BSoD can pop up within minutes of booting into Windows, before I load anything. And sometimes BSoD doesn't happen after a week of use while having full memory access.
I've reset BIOS to default setting and made sure the memory timing are standard but I still get either BSoD or missing 2GB. I've tried really slow speed and really loose timing, no help so it can't be timing problem.
I've reduced the memory to 2 sticks (1 per CPU) and changed them in between shutdown while trying to find the faulty module but none seems to be faulty. I've tried 4 sticks (2 each CPU) and no problem shows either. Either I have a bad slot in higher numbered slot, a bad memory stick that only misbehaves if I used more, Windows is misbehaving, or something else.
Yes I've rolled back drivers, did clean drivers update, etc and did a few thorough check for unwanted programs such as using eset.com online scanner. Any other idea?
PS maybe get rid of 12x2GB and get 6x4GB, or even 4x8GB and screw the tri-channel? I do know some people have trouble with overclocking with extra memory sticks, and most of the apps I use won't show noticeable speed drop with dual channel only.
