AMD c-50 replacement

Thread Starter 
So, I got this Acer Aspire laptop for free. It have this horrible APU in it. I am thinking, "okay, will be fine for the wife and kids to use for the internet and bills". Waiting on stuff on my pc to install and this POS cpu cannot hardly handle browsing the internet. What can I replace this thing with? e-350? I cannot find anywhere to purchase (still looking). Also, someone said that this cpu might be soldered into the mobo. Is that so? I up graded a cpu on a gateway gaming laptop about 6 years ago. I refurbed a dell laptop a couple months ago, Neither of those cpus were soldered into the socket.

Indeed these are soldered in. "Embedded Solutions" rolleyes.gif

Is the CPU pegged at 100% usage? It could be the slow hard drive.

nah, it is def the cpu. it even gets a 2.8 rating in windows. this thing has a 5400 rpm hdd. never seen anything like this. i think the cpu in my phone is more powerful than this thing.


update: just changing pages in OCN pegs this thing out at 90 % at least.

Reformatting and a RAM Upgrade to 2GB (if not already in there) should really give it a good boost. Trust me, that chip is fast enough for webbrowsing and even doing stuff on the side without major hiccups.

Oh yeah that's the C-50 1GHZ embedded solution. Ultra-cheap throwaway solution.

Actually I think these are made for things like Point of Sale machines, not actually Windows. I wonder how XP or a lightweight Linux would run on it.

The chip should not be up-gradable, as pointed out, however, giving it a half decent amount of RAM should do the trick, 2 or 4 Gb should be ok for this thing. It sure is not fast but unless you have some particularly heavyweight addon installed in your web browser it should not be THAT bad.

Has 3 gigs of RAM. That should be plenty. Did the alt f10 after post and installed fresh (factory defaults) windows 7. Looks like it came with 7 home premium 64 bit. Also, uninstalled all of the bloat ware.

Wow. Acer had no business putting Windows 7-64 in that thing.

I would write Acer technical support and demand a lighter OS or a refund.

It's what, a 1 GHZ single core CPU? It needs XP 32 at best.

I have AO522 with the C-50 and it is fast enough for webbrowsing.

Trick is to enable GPU acceleration everywhere you can. I really don't have many slowdowns and I am running 3-4 tabs open at a time.

The APU is soldered to the board. So no upgrades with APU-s.

I use win 7 32 bit.

Nah, having 64 bit one on it is actually pretty sensible, as that way you can upgrade it to 4 gigs or even more and can take advantage of that RAM. And 3 gigs should be indeed quite enough for this machine. Bcos of the CPU its not exactly snappy experience ofc but as mentioned, it should do ok with some tabs web browsing.
