ASUS Rampage IV Extreme burning smell

Thread Starter
Hey OCN,

Last night I was playing BF3 and I heard a sizzle like sound and a burning smell coming from my PC. Before I turned it back on I made sure all the connectors on the motherboard wernt burnt or melted. I took the CPU out and had no smell of burning. It smells like its coming from the 8 or 4 pin ATX cable but after I put my rig back together and such it works fine. It's clocked at 4.5GHz and has been priming for 3 hours now and before that I was playing BF3.

I also checked to see if any capacitors had blown but everything seems to be in working order. It still smells like smoke is coming from it or it could just be it lingering around.

Should I RMA the board even though it seems to be fine?

Any suggestions would be very helpful!

Thanks smile.gif

Did you also inspect the back of the board? Otherwise I'd say if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I didn't remove the motherboard from the case but I removed everything else. Should I go back and do a full check over the back of the board as well just to be safe?

I'd inspect the back of the board, just in case. Don't want to risk a system like that.

I've seen this happen from another member. The 8 pin cpu plug melted a tad. Mostly burned on the back side of the mobo though.

Aright I disassembled my rig, had a look around the back of the board, couldn't SEE any damage but its definable the 8pin that was giving off the smell. I fixed up some of the stand offs on my case which seemed a little angled. I pretty much just cleaned the 8pin and the 4pin and I'm not smelling any burning now after I've put it back together.

So I don't know whether I should RMA or just use as is because it really just seems fine to me.

After 7 Days of use my ASUS Rampage IV Extreme went Snap, Crackle n Pop. I smelt the burnt PCB smell before turning around to my machine going.. NO.. NO... NOOOOOOOOO. whilst the fan light on my Corsair 600TM just flicker like it was shorting out.

Motherboard is now dead even though power goes through it, Debug Error 00. Just about to return my board under RMA.

Motherboard totally smells of burnt PCB all over it, but cant see any damage. Hoping its a once off. redface.gif

Are you sure it isn't that new computer smell of computer parts heating up, Explain the burning odor was it strong intense fast, or a rather mellow almost slow smell of PC parts heating up, It is normal the heating smell but please explain the smell in further detail.
