Best raid for storage? Raid controller recommendation? - Page 2

If you're going to run eight 2TB hard drives why not run RAID 1+0? Just a thought? Good for performance and redundancy.

Raid 6 and 8 ports is going to be a bit pricey.
The cheapest 8 port card that does RAID 6, I think would be the LSI 9261-8i http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816118132 which is $474 or Areca ARC-1223-8I for $470 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816151104 .

If you want more ports, either expanders or get a card with more ports.

@halcyon RAID6 is better for a storage array as you get more space( 1+0 you get around 7TB, Raid 6 you get ~13TB).

RAID 10 or 01 are total wastes. They dictate which two drives can die, and they waste disk space. With RAID 6, any two drives can die. You can build gigantic arrays and only waste two drive's worth of space. Parity calculating performance is not an issue with modern controllers. Less than $500 for a something not meant for the consumer is a good deal.
