core i7 980extreme

Thread Starter
hi all, I have the option to get either 980extreme or 3770k for the same price but as I understand the 980 is better
so! I wanna go with Asus sabertooth z77 cause of his good clean look does he support the 980?
if not how is the Asus rampage 3 overall? and compare to the sabertooth?
many thanks..

3770K will be faster in most cases. The 980X will be faster in heavily threaded applications due to having 6 cores/12 threads, but the 3770K has much higher IPC and can clock higher.

If you do get the 980x, it's LGA 1366 so it'll be the Sabertooth x58 not the z77

The 980 extreme isn't supported on z77 boards, it's a different socket

edit: beaten to the punch!

The 980x is an awesome chip, but who told you it was better ? Better at what ? What will you be using it for primarily ? Tell us a bit about the machine you are trying to build because 1366 is EOL and is a dead socket with no path to upgrade.

Well, heres the deal

As far as the Processor's go the 980x will be more futureproof having 6 cores

HOWEVER

the 980x also rests on a dead socket, meaning if you want to upgrade you need a whole new board.

I would personally go for the 980x because even thought it's a dead socket, you probably won't need to replace it for a few years, and also, 1366 (I think thats the socket) Motherboards are dirt cheap, due to them being old gen

also, no matter which you get, FOLD FOR OCN on it biggrin.gif

Are all of you calling the lga 1366 a dead socket not realizing he is getting a 3770k which is also end of life for lga1155

Either way whatever proccesor he upgrades to next will require another motherboard

If you use programs that can really use all the threads you can throw at them (encoding, rendering) 980X is better. Otherwise, the 3770K is better. It really depends on what you're going to use it for.
As for upgrade paths, neither really has one. 1336 has been EOL for a while now, but there isn't going to be anything better than the 3770K on 1155, which will be replaced with 1150 next year.

doh.gif completely for got about that, however, my choice still stands, and now it is even firmer, both are dead sockets, 980x is a much better chip, and cheaper Motherboards
