Best cpu for gaming?

Thread Starter
Hello, I currently have an Athlon II x3 450 with an Asrock 970 extreme motherboard. My current cpu is bottlenecking my gtx 570 in the games that I enjoy the most such as Battlefield 3 and GTA IV. There are 4 cpus that I am looking at as possible upgrades:

Phenom II x6 1045t: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1724262&CatId=4432

Phenom II X4 975 BE: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103924

FX-4170: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106009

FX-6100: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103962

I am not afraid of overclocking but am still learning and have not had much luck with stability. Please help me decide on which cpu is the best for gaming. Thanks

Edit: So after some more research, I think my decision is between the Phenom II x6 1045T and Phenom II x4 975 BE. I would be overclocking either one but cannot find a straight answer on which is better for gaming.

BF3 is a rare game that can use several cores. Get a Thuban, FX-6100, or FX-8120/8150 for best results. The Thuban is probably your best choice, because it will outperform Bulldozer on games that only utilize one or two cores.

Actually I would avoid that specific 1045t. I've heard that you can only overclock by increasing the bus speed, which is a headache (for me at least). Because you new to overclocking try to get a Black Edition Phenom x6. If not, stick with bulldozer.

You should consider a 960T instead of the 1045T.

If you are lucky and unlock the 960T, you get a 3 Ghz six core.

Im sure the 960T will beat the 1045T at stock

if it does it wont be by much it wouldnt be hard at all to get a 300mhz bump out of the 1045t to get it to 3ghz plus you wont have to worry about trying to unlock the cpu to get a 6 core since you will have already purchased a 6 core cpu. I have a 1045t and there fairly easy to OC

Dont ever expect a cpu to unlock expect to get what you buy if it unlocks its just a bonus

OP between the 975 and the 1045t it is really up to you the 975 will most likely OC a little higher and be alot easier to OC than the 1045t. However the 1045t will give you 2 extra cores which are helpfull some games and other multithreaded tasks. You should be able to squeze a modest 3.7-3.9ghz OC out of your 1045t depending on your cooler. the 975 has a better chance of breaking 4ghz and will be easier to OC

He might not be able to find a 960T. They're kind of thin on the ground these days.

In any game except BF3, the 960T would be faster than a 1045T at stock, but not by much.

The 1045T isn't that hard to overclock. Using the bus speed, it's fairly easy to get to around 3.5 GHz with no problems at all, and depending on how high you can up the bus clock, you can conceivably get near 4.0. I got to 3.5 on a 1035T without even increasing the voltage on the CPU.
