Thermochromic Vortex...

Thread Starter
Name sounds pretty cool right? Anyone had any experience working with thermochromic stuff before? E.g the dyes you can get?

I just had this vision of a vortex that changes colour with temperature, so I had to whip it up in photoshop:

700

Not the best job I know, but how cool would it be? I would seriously like to create something like this and thought this would be the best place to look see of someone had done it previously?

Next best thing would be to get some thermochromic paint and paint the outside of water cooling pipes:

339

So yeah, just checking to see if anyone had any tips? I really wanna try something with this thermochromic stuff but not sure where to start.

Ah that is pretty cool, exactly the sort of thing I'm looking into. I've just sent an email to LCR hallcrest, manufacturers of thermochromic products, and I'll be looking into making something like this pretty soon.

you'll need to make sure the temp range for the paint matches the temp range for your loop. you wouldn't want it running red or blue all the time.

Yeah, it appears that this stuff is quite tuneable - i.e you could get it to change colour at any temperature. The problem is the stuff that would be mixable with the coolant isn't so tuneable and only has a very small range and only turns one colour...maybe 2 if you mix 2 different ones together, but that's pushing it.

I have managed to whip up a vortex though:

700

So we're halfway there...I've been in contact with the company that makes thermochromic stuff and I'm gonna see if I can't get some samples to give it a try, then I'll work on making it look really cool.

I'll keep you posted.
