5850 upgrade

Thread Starter
I been looking at purchasing a new gpu card that is a good upgrade over my current 5850, but that is not a side grade.

I play on a 24" monitor at 1920 × 1080 resolution. Now, I been looking at 560ti and it seems more like a side grade upgrade. I was hoping to get a good card in the 200-250 range, but the ones I look don't seem be a very large upgrade. I could get some thing more expensive, but I want to wc the card so I'm taking into account the cost of wc parts for the gpu. The only card I found is the gtx 480 from amazon. I can overclock it with a wc set up easily without having to worry about overheating. it's also 199.99 with free shipping and no taxes on amazon, but there aren't too many full cover gtx480 water blocks on the market compared to the new gpu models.

http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-GTX480-Graphics-015-P3-1480-KR/dp/B004EHWMP6/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1340838623&sr=1-1&keywords=480gtx

I also found a HD 6950 card that might fit the bill of what I'm looking for in a gpu. The Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 from amazon is priced at $229.99.

http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-DL-DVI-I-SL-DVI-D-PCI-Express-100312-3L/dp/B005X64QAG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1340838340&sr=8-1&keywords=6950

The gpu is pretty much the only part I have left to finish my new build. My parts are order just waiting for shipping.

I don't really play too many modern new games. Most of my games are older games like sins of empire, shogun total war 2, crysis, and so on. The only exception is I play swtor, but otherwise I haven't played any recent new games. I did notice on my current desktop computer that I can't max out shogun total war 2 and I need to set settings to medium.

Perhaps I should just wait until gpu prices drop and upgrade gpu later?

I would say loom for some deals on a 580 and forget about water cooling it. 480 is a good card but just like my 460s that series is becoming very dated by ocn standards of course...

You think a gtx 580 used at around $300-330 is a good price from amazon warehouse?

I also found a MSI N570GTX Twin Frozr III Power Edition for like $242 from amazon warehouse too.

The 580 isn't a very good value considering you can get a new 7870 or used 7950 for around that price.

How about these cards:

Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 GHZ 2 GB DDR5 HDMI/DVI-I/Dual Mini DP PCI-Express Graphics Card 11199-00-20G

$330 with a 15 dollar rebate.

Sapphire Radeon HD 7850 OC 2 GB DDR5 HDMI/DVI-I/Dual Mini DP PCI-Express Graphics Card 11200-01-20G

$249.99

Both cards are new. What's the difference between the 7850 and the 7870 and is the 65 dollar difference after rebate worth the extra cost. The 7850 is exactly on the mark of what I have left on my amazon gift card. I have $250 left so the card won't cost me any more money from my bank account, but if the 7870 is significantly better I rather spend the extra money on it. Also how loud are these cards and heat produced. I won't be able to water cool these cards and I have 800d case for it, but will be able to wc the cpu.

I been doing a bit more research and at the price of the 7850 I might as well just buy a 7950 for only 20 or 30 dollars more for a significant better gpu.

Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 DVI-I/HDMI/2x Mini-Displayport PCI-Express Graphic Card GV-R795WF3-3GD
New at 369.99 or buy a used one for around $330 from warehouse, which would be about equal in price to the 7870 new.

If you are going to overclock...

Sapphire Radeon 7850 @ $239.99

HIS IceQ X Radeon 7850 @ $224.99 after $20 MIR

XFX Radeon 7850 Core Edition @ $219.99 after $15 MIR (CHECK THE REVIEWS FIRST!)

If not...

MSI Twin Frozr GTX 570 @ $249.99

EVGA GTX 570 @ $239.99 after $25 MIR

I would highly suggest getting a Radeon 7850 and overclocking it. I have my reference 7850 overclocked to match a GTX 580 performance on stock voltage.

Of course if you want used then get a GTX 580, Radeon 7870, or equivalent.

Get a HD 7850. Overclocks very well. At 1 Ghz you get GTX 570 performance. At 1.2 Ghz you get close to GTX 580 performance. All this for much lesser heat, power and noise.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Powercolor/HD_7850_PCS_Plus/31.html
HD 7870 (1 Ghz) - 49.5
Powercolor PCS+ HD 7850 (1240) - 50.2
GTX 580 - 51.7

The HIS Iceq HD 7850 and Sapphire HD 7850 OC are good options. Both cards have good coolers and will stay below 70c even at 1.2 Ghz speeds.

here is a video review HIS IceQ X HD 7850 TurboX. its an oc version of the same card.

I'm personally a big fan of where the 7870 is priced and performs. To me it seems like the perfect sweet spot in cards right now. After rebate a few of them hit $299 and it performs on par with a 580 while using less energy and has 2gb of VRAM and from what I understand overclocks very well. Seems like a steal to me.

the problem is there are some good deals on HD 7950 for a little bit more.

MSI HD 7950 OC- USD 360 (USD 340 after mail in rebate)

Ideally this is the card to get . You cannot beat its price perf. clock for clock HD 7950 is close to HD 7970 perf.

I think the 7950 would be a great upgrade for you and to be honest water cooling one of them wouldn't even be necessary. not to mention adding a second one down the road in a year or so wouldn't cost to much more!
