The servers at my work have the enterprise, as well as the enterprise with vflash. Enterprise is nice to have since it's like KVM over IP, plus some montering tools. The vflash allows you to store something like an os image on it, and you may be able to boot from it, but I'm not 100% sure since I haven't played with it yet.

I agree. IP/KVM on iDRAC Enterprise is nice to have in case of an OS crash or need to access the BIOS remotely. The monitoring tools are also nice. It gives you information on almost every hardware device on the server.

Some cool features of the enterprise:
The ability to view the last 3 boots and crash screens frame by frame as soon as POST Begins
The ability to control the System using a Java/Active X based iKVM Agent.
The ability to mount virtual media and boot to it (Eg an .iso or you can mount your local dvd drive.)
A dedicated management NIC if you choose to use it.
Cool things in general
The ability to deploy operating systems without needing driver disks (persistent storage of common drivers on a meser (embedded flash on mobo)
The ability to update drivers and firmware and roll back them using the Life Cycle Controller
The ability to control system power states and monitor consumption/usage.
I would go for the Enterprise unless you needed to VFlash to run an Embedded Hyper visor or OS. - FYI - You can boot to VFLASH
What server are your looking at?
Servers which include only a BMC in the base configuration.
PE R210, PE R310, PE R410, PE R510
PE T110, PE T310, PE T410
Servers which include idrac express regardless of configuration.
PE R610,R710,R810,R910
PE T610, and PE T710
See Table 1-1 for a Feature comparison

Hey, thanks for the replies - it's appreciated. I'll likely be buying two R510s, one for hosting VMs (8-disk chassis), one as an iSCSI target (12-disk chassis). Looks like it'll be the iDRAC 6 Enterprise.

I'm buying this gear for an SME so buying brand new iDRAC 6 Enterprise cards (and having them supported by Dell) isn't an issue.
Also, iDRAC 6 Enterprise has IP KVM built in. Question: "a nice Network controller power bar" - explain?

With a IP Power bar, you can control the power bar, so for example if server 1 is plugged into power 1 you can remote into the bar, and reboot, shutdown down, etc. The dell idrac6 enterprise does the same thing.
http://www.hltechnology.com/one_prod.php?pid=24429
Id get the Dell IDrac6 enterprise for sure!!
