Worth trying -bigadv on 8 cores?

Thread Starter
I did some reading that they changed bigadv to only work for 16-core machines, but that there is a way to fool FAH into seeing as many cores as you want with some Linux trickery. I have an HP server with two Xeon E5450's (8 cores total) and was considering putting Linux on it and trying for bigadv, but only if it is actually going to work. No reason to waste my time if I won't be able to meet the deadlines. Anyone know how I can gague if the server is up to the task without actually trying it out?

Currently the box has Server 08 installed and is crunching SMP for 20-30k PPD. Any input is appreciated! thumb.gif

What speed are they at, and what cpus specifically? read the sig.

You could easily trick the computer into thinking there are more cores, if they can finish them in time is the question.

I think they would finish it.

http://linuxforge.net/docs/crunching/fah-vmware.php

Try that, with decent download speed, you should be up and running in like ten minutes.

Just going to have to use
./fah6 -bigadv -smp 8

If it does not download a bigadv unit. You should try this guide here.

Will give it a go after this WU completes. I don't know why I forgot about VMWare and went straight to considering native installs. Thanks for the help, I'll post back with results!

So far the VMWare Linux is netting about the same PPD as Windows was(maybe a small boost), but I'd still need to complete 10 WUs before I can start bigadv. After a week or so hopefully I'll start seeing some

You might get some 6900s or 6901s, but more than likely you'll just get SMP units if you keep it at 8 cores. I have a server with dual E5420s and I just let it run SMP because I have other software that needs to run on it and there's no way I'd complete anything but a 6900 or a 6901. I have the 12 core hack running on my 2700k and I get 6900-6904s. I haven't got any of the new units yet. I have a server with dual E5520s and with 16 cores I get the new units which it can't complete. I also have software running on that server. It might have a chance if I didn't use it for anything but folding.

I was just figuring, that 8 physical cores, would be better than 4 or 6 physical cores, with ht. Then, the 2600k-3960k have much higher mhz.

Figured it was worth at try.

Yeah, there isn't a reason it wouldn't be worth a shot. If it can't complete them in time, switch back smile.gif. I was just saying that it's hard getting bigadv units with just 8 cores. 12 seems to be the magic number so if you don't get any 6900-6904s, try doing the 12 core hack and see if you can complete them.

You'll want to make a bash script and have this in it:
Code:
cat /proc/stat | awk 'BEGIN { TARGET_NCPUS=12 } ; { if ($1 == "intr") { for (i=NR-2;i<TARGET_NCPUS;i++) print "cpu" i S } ; S="" ; for (i=2;i<=NF;i++) S=S " " $i ; print }' > /tmp/stat.save
mount --bind /tmp/stat.save /proc/stat

I usually just make a corefix.sh file and add that code to it in my FAH folder and then reference it in the rc.local by adding:
Code:
sh /fah/corefix.sh

Hey, thanks so much for the help guys! After I get those 10 WUs done we'll see about the projects I start receiving without the corehack. The box is also limited to 4GB of memory so that may also restrict things. Time will tell!

4GB will not be restrictive (as long as both CPUs run the number of memory channels it's capable of, dual channel on those CPUs I believe).

I wouldn't even bother trying this, especially not for the 16 core WU's, the 12 core WU's probably wouldn't even finish on time (6903's probably would, but 6904's I doubt).  You could throw the bigadv flag on without corefix, but chances are you won't get too many 8 core bigadv WU's.
