I understand that, but can they tell that the chip itself is a 7970 chip (aka not laser cut by amd?)

Its just annoying that the only "proof" I can find of this is the horribly faked ones on the chinese site- referring to a hard to find card. If it has been done, why no real proof?

A 7970 bios does help though w/o unlocking shaders:
Powertune TDP limits are much higher, I saw no throttling at all even in occt/furmark w 7970 bios. The powercolor OC card bios also has shown a higher TDP in my testing. I went back to stock bios because VRM temps got too high for my comfort.

Have you tried the Sapphire 950mhz edition BIOS?

It is best BIOS I have tried for my card. I have tried other BIOS for my cards but this one is most stable for my card.

Sonda5 which version did you use? Check gpuz bios version.... I see 2 of them in the vga bios database.

Btw the 950 bios has a higher Tdp like the 7970s, example +7 on 950 bios is same throttling like +20 on a reg 7950 bios in OCCT torture test.

I think that the throttling is what slows down some games like crysis w explosions etc.... but amd/nvidia put it to protect the card from crazy overclocks lol. Luckily for us, the amd throttling is less than on nvidia 660,670.

I think this is the most hilarious thread I've seen on here so far.

The one that I posted a link to is direct from my card. This BIOS came direct from Sapphire when I asked for help about switch 1 and switch 2 BIOS differences. They sent me the BIOS is email and I flashed it and have found it to be the best BIOS that I have used so far.

The BIOS that I linked to is dated from May of 2012 and I haven't seen it anywhere else. A few people who have tried it have stated that it works great.

This may be the BIOS that I linked to.

I will run GPU-Z on my card to check for certain when I get my loop put back together this weekend.

This BIOS at TPU looks newer. Can't comment on it because I haven't tried it yet. It may be the magic unlock BIOS. smile.gif

I cracked up when I saw this message. AMD has a twisted sense of humor and because of this joke it leads me to believe that the card can be unlocked to full HD7970 if I could figure out how to do it.
