First time builder, need some help...

Thread Starter
...Please, and thank you. wink.gif As the title suggests, I'm new here and this is my first time trying to build a rig. I thought it would be a fun summer project and help my knowledge of how and why computers work the way they do.
So far, what I'm thinking is a pine wood case with a sliding glass door for access. I have uploaded a sketch at the bottom for your viewing pleasure and critique. I will be using this build for gaming(Skyrim/BF3), engineering software (AutoCAD and SketchUp) and maybe some 3D rendering software. I want to be able to multitask...heavily. Like playing a game (or likely Sketchup), with iTunes running, and be able to browse the internet for pics/research/whatever. Any known configurations that can do this reliably? Would the i7 be worth the investment? The beastlier the better, for a reasonable price. Also, I was thinking of doing a mild overclock, but something not too risky. My skill level is not very adept as this is my first build but I have to start somewhere right?
Also, I know I want a SSD for my OS (probably Windows 7 and Ubuntu) and maybe a game or two, and a 1-1.5TB HD for everything else, with a SeaGate Barracuda 7200.7 120GB back up drive (old rig); but I am a bit worried about the life span of SSD due to reviews.

Some questions:
Any recommendations on the case design, because wood is not a very common case building material?
Any recommended noise control methods for wood on glass? I've found some good info on rubber stoppers and foam.
Is liquid cooling worth the investment if I won't be doing any heavy overclocking or gaming?
Do you prefer a vertical or horizontal disc ejection (know of any optical drives capable of both like the Xbox360?)
Possible rig? idk, let me know! :D (Click to show)

Will also be needing a Motherboard and PSU so say another $220? Building a custom case so that's not added in.
So right around $1,300

Budget: I'm willing to pay up to $1500 but I would like to keep it under $12/13 hundred.

For an sketch of the chassis I'm custom building, see this thread (updated [8/17/12]).

Edit: Removed picture + fancy code stuff.

Upgrade the CPU to an i7-2600k. Those apps require a lot of CPU power. CPU power comes before more RAM for those apps.
A few suggestions:

1) Go for a Crucial M4 128GB at the very least, or a 256GB for about 60$ more.
2) If you believe you need Hyper Threading, go for the i7 3770K or 2600K, if not, go for the i5 3570K. I see no point in still buying the 2500K as the i5 3570K is only a couple of bucks more expensive.
3) 8GB of RAM should already be enough.
4) Go for a WD Caviar Green 1TB or 2TB with 7200RPM, not 5900.
5) If you want to be more future proof, I'd go for a GTX 670 or higher.
6) If you really plan to burn BluRay discs, go for the one you suggested. In all other cases, just go for a common 20$ DVD burner.

Just my two cents. smile.gif

Thanks for the advice. While I don't see my self frequently using BluRay, I never thought I would need an MP3 until I got one wink.gif
My hope is that the drive with stay with me for many builds and I currently don't own a PS3 so I have no way to utilize BluRay technology.

Any recommended PSU and MoBo (under $200-250 maybe)? For the i7 I need a P67 but that still leaves my options pretty open.

Nice build. The only change I would make is on the monitor. I would recommend one of the Korean 1440p monitors for around $300. I have a Shimian and it's awesome. Sitting up close, the higher resolution is a real benefit.

Korean Monitor Thread.

fans are not necessary (imo at least). Im running a carbide 400r with just the 3 stock fans and it runs plenty nice but there are lots of grills for fan mounts (dust!!!!!!!! mad.gif ) I would go for a silencing case like Antec p280 or Fractal Design Define r3 (if they have at Fry`s) I dont know if a thrid party cpu cooler will be needed so you should get someone else`s input on this. As for the ``hope its worth it`` of course it will be worth it. As first i felt kinda bad for spending so much money but once u start to use ur system, that remorse will go away biggrin.gif
