I need some info about AMD CPUs

Thread Starter
Hello,

I've always been an intel guy, and know quite alot about how to overclock these cpus ect..

But I'm a complete noob when it comes to AMD.
I dont even know which socket is the newest one XD

So I decided i would look at AMD proccessors at my supplier website.
I honestly don't know why I never even took the time to look at their processors since I only buy AMD GPUS

SO down to the point.

I was SOOOO surprised when I saw like 8 core proccessors with low prices, and 4,2ghz stock clocked proccessors??????

all the intels are sitting around like 3.3..4ghz stock.

So I'm interested if anyone can tellme about the diffrences between AMD and Intel proccessors and possibly open up a new option for my next build.

is there some kind of flaw in these cpus that has caused me to never look at them, because when i saw the nice deals and power on the processors i had a pretty hardcore facepalm moment,

thabks

Intel IB kick the trash out of any of the AMd counter parts ... intact Sandy bridge kick the trash out of any as well LOL ... so you are asking the wrong question ...

You should ask, should i skip this CPU generation and wait for the next AMD/intel offering ... answer (short and sweet) Yes, unless you are rendering stuff and what not ... if not just wait ... the newer AMD (cross fingers) will be not bad smile.gif

depending on what you're doing, the 8150 can either be a very good or a mediocre chip. If you game, you're going to want to get a 2500k. But if you do video editing at all, the 8150, 8120, 6200, and 6100 fx chips are very effective for the budget.

In general the main difference is amd has more cores for cheaper, but the performance per core isn't quite as good. If you want to get into AMD you'll want to wait just a few more months for Vishera. Vishera is a revamped version of the chips that they have out right now, It should be clocked higher, use less power and overclock better according to the information that's available right now, and it'll be on socket AM3+ which is already available.

am3+ is latest socket, the 8 cores are basically four cores split in two, and the clocks are not equivalent to intel clocks

Basically, the two companies have flipped philosophies on CPUs. Back in the days of the Athlon XP and Athlon 64, AMD was pushing higher IPCs at lower clock rates, while Intel was competing with very high clockspeeds on the slower Pentium 4 architecture.

Now, Intel has the processors that do more work at lower clock rates, and AMD is trying to fight back with the new FX series, that hits higher clockspeeds but doesn't do nearly as muck work per clock cycle. AMD will also sell you a processor with more cores for the same amount of money as an Intel CPU with less cores.

Those AMD eight-core processors really shine in applications that can use a lot of cores; if you're running a rendering farm, or a server, they're very good value for the money. Where they fall short is if you're doing something that can't use all of the cores; for example, most games can use two cores at the most. Despite the slower clock rates, Intel has a big advantage there right now. You have to put a heavy overclock on an FX to make it competitive. But most people who choose AMD for gaming rigs just opt for the older Phenom II processors instead. They have a higher IPC and thus perform better in applications where not all of the cores are utilized.

AMD's next-generation FX, the Piledriver series, should fix some of Bulldozer's weaknesses, but it doesn't arrive until the fall. And as software developers begin using assembly tools that can take advantage of more cores, AMD's approach will result in better performance. But we're not there yet.

thanks for all the great responses guys.

Well i'm not currently looking for an upgrade. seeing as I have the I7 950 which is a powerhouse when clocked anywhere between 4-5ghz (it's even pretty powerfull at stock speed.)

I personally plan on upgrading to something new though at the end of this year or early next year.
Reason being that the wife is still in the socket 775 with the E8500, clocked at 4ghz.
This cpu still performes quite nicely for what she does, gaming and photoshop.

But When I compare it to mine it's just a whole diffrent world.
So when I upgrade She will get my I7.

So this next upcoming chip is suppose to be something good?

Guesses are that it will be 10-15% faster than bulldozer. Which would probably put it a few % above the Phenom II's. But no one actually knows.

Although, I would say there isn't much chance of it toppling sandy bridge or ivy bridge when it comes to gaming. Having the extra cores really doesn't do anything for you unless you are running a server or doing rendering work.

Something I wasn't clear about.

I am a gamer, (i enjoy very much overclocking)

I'm also a musician so I compose music with the pc.
I also have a studio so I also work on the technical part of music.
work for album artwork.
rendering videos of gameplay.
creating music videos sometimes.

so i don't just use the PC for soley gaming.
So I prefer something versitile.
