Voyager GT 64GB vs Supersonic Magnum 64/128Gb USB3.0 Flash Drive

Thread Starter
I'm trying to decide between the Corsair Voyager GT Short body 64GB and the Patriot Supersonic Magnum 64/128Gb USB 3.0 Flash drives and I cannot seem to decide between them.

I have been reading about the Manufacturing Issue with the Voyager GT but it seems to have been fixed in the S (Short Body version).

The disadvantage I have noticed with the Patriot is that it might get hot and block the adjacent usb port.

Does the Corsair Voyager GT have wear levelling? All of Patriot's flashdrives have wear levelling, which should keep them going for a really long time.

Considering all the refurb/reconditioned Corsair flashdrives I saw in the past, and all the flawless experiences and testimonials I've heard for Patriot flashdrives... I lean towards Patriot. Corsair makes great RAM, nice PSUs, great peripherals (like headsets), great cooling products, etc. - but their flashdrives have a more spotted history. I don't know about this particular generation, but I sure used to see a lot of complaints.

Thanks for the Advice Kramy. I'm actually looking at obtaining either the 64Gb or the 128 Supersonic Magnum by Patriot.

Kramy I've picked up the 128Gb version of the Patriot Supersonic Magnum. I've noticed however it likes the Intel USB3 on my Laptop better than the 3rd Party Nec/Renesas chipset.

It's quite massive in size and the same size as my USB2 64Gb Xporter Magnum. The only downside to the USB is that it blocks adjacent USB ports but that is a small price to pay for performance and reliability.

I had pretty bad performance on my Asmedia USB3 controller too, until I flashed it.

You probably have to flash the USB3 NEC/Renesas controller. I think they were bought out by Asmedia or something like that? You'd have to look up the device IDs in the device manager to confirm it's the same controller - more info here:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1275701/usb-3-0-drive-disappears-upon-restart/0_100#post_17587996

Some of the later posts go over how to flash it, in detail.

Just bought a SanDisk Extreme USB 3.0 32GB ($50) and 16GB ($30). The drives appear to be running fairly cool. Certainly no worse than my other USB2 flash drives.

CrystalDiskMark Benches (connected to native USB3 controller on Intel DQ77KB motherboard):

Amazon also has the 64GB model (with sequential writes up to 155MB/s) but at ~$85, I'd rather sacrifice the small form factor and just get a 2.5" 120/128GB SSD + USB3 enclosure.

Kramy the only problem with updating the firmware is that it only works for single controllers. With the Maximus IV Extreme-Z I am currently running 4.0.0.15 and I'd like to update to 4.0.0.20 however the firmware update utility will stop if there are multiple controllers.

I did find this after careful googling:

Edit: It seems those instructions don't apply to the current 4.0.0.20 firmware release and only the older firmware releases since there is no such configuration files.

It seems I do not need to update the firmware. On the front panel the Patriot Magnum 128Gb liked the second USB3 port on the HAF-X and not the first.
