Building 1st Rig: Vol: For work, home, and some play.

I'm not sure where to post this, but here goes.

I have never built a computer before and have always wanted a desktop. My last desktop was during the x86 days. You could imagine how long ago that is. Anyhow, I bought a Cooler Master Elite 431 + and wanted to build a desktop. It's purpose is primarily for work, and home use; however I would like to have the liberty in playing some games as well. I would like for it to power 2- 27 inch monitors, and for it to be reliable. I need to look into the SSD and hard drive brands.

This will be a longer term build as I'm not in a rush to do it, I probably won't finish it till about 3-4 months in as I'm swamped with work. But would waiting till November or Black Friday be a good thing in shopping the big components?

Case:
Cooler Master Elite 431 +

My target is the following:

Intel Core i7-3770 Ivy Bridge 3.4GHz LGA 1155 77W
Corsair H80
8-16GB Ram

Budget:
$700-$1000

I'm a bit unsure about the motherboard, and graphics card part. Any ideas?

Thanks

Hey,

Thank you for that. I don't have anything set in stone, but would have about $700-$1,000 budgeted. I wouldn't mind spending more if it was necessary, but from my research I can build something pretty good.

The build above is quite a nice configuration. This is another potential alternative.

The Z77 Sabertooth is drool-worthy.
Any of the P8Z77-(####) just depends on what you're looking for
you can go with the more basic version but as you go up in price they start getting into more and more advanced overclocking features and unnecessary stuff for a 1st rig. Though if you feel the need for the best of the best you can go with the deluxe, or premium for the low low price of either $269-400ish. I just don't have 3 monitors running tri-sli and the need to have the keys on my computer levitate to my fingers. Most of the $230+ mobo's are nice and feature rich but overkill. Putting most of your pennies in a rockstar gpu is the thing to do for gaming. The Asrock Z77 extreme 4 is an example of great price for a board for a gaming computer. By the time you can really benefit from a board as feature rich as some of the $200-300 boards you'll probably be high on the hog of your 2nd or third build.

Let me look through the suggestions here and the above. I just got my case today and feel excited. I just want to be honest with myself in deciding which route to take. Ultimately, I want reliability, and want to run the ivy bridge chipsets. I don't know if I'm going to be playing around w/ the over-clocking thing like most here, although I'm not ruling that out.

The front panel cables are already confusing me. LOLZ

I know deep down, I could probably get by with a very cheap build though. lol

At the end of the day what makes you happy with your build is more important than what build you choose.wink.gif

Since this is "primarily for work and home use" what do you do for "work"? This is a very crucial aspect, because if you are doing intensive work tasks, we can change a build accordingly.
