so it works before you insert it into the case.
Works momentarily in the case,
Then fails to work anytime afterwards.

Definitely points to a short circuit

The PSU is not likely to be the issue as the mobo voltages are controlled by onboard VRMs. Since the mobo ran fine outside the case, it is clearly an installation issue. If you are smelling a strong odor on boot with the mobo IN the case and then the mobo is dead - it sure sounds like something is short circuiting and killing the boards. I'm surprised they are RMA'ing these as this is a PC builder error, not a defective product and PC builder errors are not warrantied.

Is it very easy to over tighten the screws into the motherboard and ruin it? Or could metal in the case touching the board fry it? It's installed on standoffs but maybe I'm not seeing a contact point behind the board? I thought if a case is shorting the board it wouldnt destroy it just not work in case,

Bending the board when screwing it in too far will cause board to malfunction. Make sure that the screws don't actually tighten. Just a little loose. I did the same thing on the 990FX in my Sig and my BIOS chip doesn't run properly, my CMOS settings don't save because I bent the slot. I bet that's your issue. Plus, don't let it touch the case as the others are saying.

Are you using the washers on the standoff screws?

I didn't get any standoff washers with the case. I have a painted antec gaming series case. I screw the brass standoffs directly into the holes that lineup with the motherboard holes, then the screws on the motherboard. I do however make the screws snug not loose, but again I'm not putting more force then one hand turning till it stops and then that little snugging extra. I thought about washers but I have never used them before and they didn't come with it anything.

I examined the case again there is def a tight little spot on the bottom left where there is barely any clearance at all. The riser seems to keep it above the rivets that stick up along the case wall but I am afraid of the little extra leads that come off the back of every motherboard. You know where they solder it on the bottom and the wire/metal sticks out about an 1/8 inch or so. If one of those little things is touching any part of the case or rivets that could def be the cause? I looked at all the reviews people didn't have any issues with the boards shorting out in the cases. I even looked both times I have installed to make sure the board cleared the very small area on the bottom left above the power supply. It seems to clear but I cant see behind the board to make sure nothing is touching a little rivet sticking up.

This is very frustrating because at this point I know I am RMA'ing the board for a refund because it doesnt work outside the case anymore. I ordered a new gigabyte board to eliminate the ASRock being bad. I am pretty certain something I have is the cause of this, and is ruining the boards. I don't know any other thing to try besides riser washers. Do they go on both sides of the motherboard? I have had enough people say the power supply is most likely not the cause because it works in this computer I am on now and it even booted the motherboard before case installation. If the power supply touches metal in the case it should have its own insulation and not be the cause. That leaves me with my case is touching behind where I cant see, or I got two bad boards in a row that are breaking upon being powered up. Or I am find it hard to believe but making the screws too tight and ruined both boards that way.

I took the motherboard out of the box to put it back in the case and check the only point in which there could be contact on the bottom left and it appears to clear but it is VERY close to the motherboards back. These are basically the rivets that hold the case together which are painted as well as the whole case. The paint doesnt cover them in entirety so you can actually see shiny metal. When I put the motherboard in place this bottom left location is the only place where I have to press down on the motherboard to contact the standoff. This is where it is pretty congested and things are mm away from touching. Is it possible to put electrical tape over these two rivets to ensure if it makes contact with the board it wont short it out. I checked every other spot and nothing should be in contact with the motherboard to short it. My next best guess is when I screw the boards in I am over tightening them and shorting the board that way.

This is the spot I am talking about close to the motherboard underneath. Is this close enough to cause some sort of non contact short and kill my mobo? I measured and it seems to be an 1/8 inch or less if something straight is set from point to point. Meaning if I am correct the motherboard sits less than an 1/8" from these this little piece of metal sticking up, two of them. The other looks lower though. Can I put electrical tape over these and would that eliminate the chance? Is it possible something close but not touching could short the board? That's all I got for the case as far as possible shorts. I am beginning to think it could possibly be a power supply issue even though it tested fine in a less power hungry machine. I would imagine I did not receive two bad motherboards because the 2nd worked then didn't after case install. The case is painted but I clipped on it with my anti static band. Same symptoms after case install on two boards, one known good one. My new board comes maybe tomorrow, I would like to test it more thorough before putting it in the case. Like hookup the HDD's and dvdrom and some fans before casing it. That would leave the case or power supply. The CPU has to be good because it worked after this happened firs time.

Let me know what you guys think about that pic of the metal sticking up close to the board but shouldn't be touching. I cant get a pick with the motherboard lined up on standoffs, I tried.

contact with the case causes it to start and shutdown quickly and continued exposure fries the mb for sure,as i said i forgot bout the standoff screws when i build my system and fried my mb,but then i got a replacement and installed it correctly.
