Ivy bridge vs. sandy bridge upgrade from a bloomfield

Hello guys,

I have my current rig (in sig) but it is not working for some reason. I have started a post about the problem and yet can't find the solution (link: http://www.overclock.net/t/1273052/help-evga-x58-le-edition-sli-not-booting-up) feel free to jump to that link and help me fix the issue, thanks! thumb.gif . I got down to thinking it's either the CPU or motherboard and since X58 motherboards are a little bit more expensive than the newer models (LGA 1155) I have decided to upgrade my computer. Problem is I haven't kept up with the new CPUs, what is the benefits of going Sandy bridge vs. Ivy bridge in terms of performance/power consumption/price/noise/heat/etc. I am going to pair with these upgrades 32GB of ram (most likely G.Skill) and an MSI 7850 twin frozr and 2 additional Dell 2412 monitors and run in eyefinity at 5760x1200. I do a lot of heavy photo editing (CS6 and LR 3) and mainly play BF3, plus some other games. Any recommendation on which path I should be taking?

Sandybridge, Run cooler at higher overclocks, use slightly more power, clock for clock slightly slower than ivy bridge cpu's. The 2500k is the sandy equivalent of the 3570k ivy cpu, the 2600k is sandy equivalent of the 3770k ivy cpu

2500k and 3570k are excellent gaming cpu's where the 2600k and 3770k use hyper threading so are more beneficial if you do video encoding, multi tasking etc. generally speaking a 4.5ghz 3570k runs on par with a 4.7ghz 2500k

If you decide to go with 1155 socket get the latest Z77 Chipset, Either way sandy or ivy they both perform great and overclock like &**&%
If you plan on overclocking ivy make sure you get the best cooler you can afford as they tend to run prety hot.

As you do video editing you want to be looking at the 2600k or 2700k sandy or the 3770k ivy cpu's thumb.gif Coupled with a high end Z77 board such as the Asrock Fatal1ty pro, excuse the pun biggrin.gif But i just love my board

You can't go wrong with either CPU. But I suggest getting an I7 3770k and a good cooler, it supports PCI Express 3.0 (Not fully used at the moment, but it's future proof), a better memory controller and, as other people suggested in another thread, having the last technology is always good thumb.gif

Regarding the GPU, I suggest considering the Nvidia 600 series. Again, you can't go wrong with them!

I usually prefer i7 (just because I want the best and latest) but recently I have been thinking about the core i5s and I hear they seem to be doing the job pretty well. I only do photo editing, I'm not that into video editing, will I still need to go with the i7? and does hyperthreading have anything to do with gaming? I see that the difference between the 2500k and the 3570k is only 10$ so I might as well go for the ivy bridge, my only concern is will the temps be higher once OC (which I plan to do). Will the stock fans handle some OC? How about the performance of the H100?

If I decide to go with the i5 3570k, is the Asrock Fatal1ty pro still needed, or can I go with a cheaper model? (This is honestly my first time hearing of Asrock, are they any good?)

As far as I know, most games don't use more than 1-2 cores, so hyperthreading is an extra that is not going to be used much for gaming. Stock fans can't handle overclock, I personally own an I5 3570k and the stock cooler is flimsy and low quality. H100 is a great cooler, kinda big for my taste. I have read a lot of good reviews regarding Asrock but I cant give you a suggestion, I don't own one, but I heard that this MoBo is really nice http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157293

The i5 is more than upto the task in hand then, so you can save money and get the i5. You don't need to go all out and buy a board such as the fatal1ty pro, The extreme 4 or 6 are also good boards from asrock. You need to decide what features your going to need on a motherboard such as sata ports how many? pcie lanes incase your looking to go sli or crossfire in the future? and other features.

Asrock make some very good motherboards but so do Asus, Gigabyte, etc. It comes down to what you prefer in the end, But bare in mind usually the saying "you pay for what you get" is true in this case and always get the best you can afford.

The stock cpu cooler is pants and will not hold an overclock on the 3570k, Pick a good air cooler and get some good thermal paste such as ic diamond or arctic silver 5. The H100 is a good cooler and should be ok for 4.5ghz overclock the high end air coolers will also perform the same as the h100 and cost less, So again it's down to taste.
