Best air cooler? Better than CNPS9900MAX? NH-D14, PH-TC14PE, CLP0587, CNPS12X, CLP0575 Frio OCK,...

Hey,
I currently have a CNPS9900MAX. I am overclocking my i7 970 and while overclocked, even in my large case (RV02), temps are hitting a little over 80C when running Prime95. I looked at newegg and found some of the more expensive coolers (I know more $$ does not always mean better) and have listed them below. I looked for some reviews but most of them looked very close to my current cooler.

Are any of the below any better than my CNPS9900MAX? Any others you would add to the list? I don't want to liquid cool. Thanks!

Noctua NH-D14
Phanteks PH-TC14PE
Thermaltake CLP0587
ZALMAN CNPS12X
Thermaltake CLP0575 Frio OCK

Out of those these 2 perform the best.
Noctua NH-D14
Phanteks PH-TC14PE

NH-D14 is very easy to install.

Even though it's not on the list I vote for the Megahalem. Had mine for a few years, first on a E8600 @ 5.0Ghz (ice cold) then on a Q9650 @ 4Ghz and now it's handling my 2700k @ 4.5GHz with no problems, never going above 65C.

here ya go, pretty recent chart of heatsink performance, not sure if your running an intel or amd (assuming intel because of your temps) but this chart is for the power the intels put out.

Many coolers missing ... New Thermalright Silver Arrow SB-E and SB-E Extreme.

I wish they did 200w and 250w tests as well.

Test is 150w steady. Some coolers on that list are probably at their peak capability while other will handle 200 or even 250w.

Also look check some of their other reivews for comparisons

Vortez do some real interesting testing using different fans and comfigureations:

I see why stock vs stock.. Look at the DBA on that thing 72... It must have massive cfm dba monsters... You can very easy ge tthe nh-d14 to drop by 6-8c by replacing the fans.. and keep it silent... Cause the stock ones are 50cfm and 60cfm....

450

There is an example 3 cougar 2 120mm and 1 140mm all 70cfm and 18dba..

See, I agree you can get lower temps with changing out fans on coolers, and I do believe that that is THE BEST way to achieve peak performance, but If I am buying a cooler like the D14 (like I own) the Silver Arrow, Phanteks, or the H100, its a brand new cooler, I shouldn't [BNEED[/B] to replace the fans. Thats why if I had it to do over again I would get the silver arrow, its the quietest, and best performing. The reason I have the D14 over that is because I got it used and a bang-up deal on it! thumb.gif

Case fans? Thats another story, usually manufactures put crap ones in and those leave the case on spot, but currently my D14 is still running stock fans. And +1 to everyone who said the D14 is an easy install.

Like what you've done with cougars.
18dBA each. TY-143 are 45dBA each. And fan noise is not same as cooler noise. Air turbulence and static pressure from fins and pipes increase dBA. Silver Arrow SB-E is 43.9dBA @ full speed.
http://www.xbitlabs.com/picture/?src=/images/coolers/thermalright-silver-arrow-sb-e/zdiagrn-xbt.png

The TY-143 are 31.4-130cfm @ 600-2500rpm & 21-45dBA
The TY-140 are 28.3-74cfm @ 900-1300rpm & 17-21dBA
The TY-141 are 28.3-74cfm @ 900-1300rpm & 17-21dBA
The TY-150 are 38.2-84cfm @ 500-1100cfm & 17-21dBA

*SB-E uses TY-141 & TY-150 and is as cool or cooler then the best @ 43.9dBA.
*Let us assume the TY-143 @ 1300rpm will be about same air flow and sound volume as TY-141 @ 1300rpm as TY-141 & TY-140 have identical specs and TY-140 & TY-143 are same physical design with different motors.
*We will disregard that TY-150 is 10cfm more air at max rpm for the moment and say both SB-E and SB-E Extreme cool the same at 1300rpm
*SB-E Extreme has another 56cfm per fan time 2 = 112cfm in reserve for additional air to improve cooling.

Yes it becomes much louder, but only if the extra cfm / rpm is used.
