I'm making a thread for each category in TC that TC Members will contribute optimization tips and tricks too. I will expand the op and reserved posts as data is collected. This thread should be used for asking questions, or contributing optimization tips related to the AMD GPU category only. Off topic posts will be expunged.

I just now notice this.My captain just recently had to temp me in this category. He was surprised at how it found not his card being unstable, but the system. Yeah... this is a bit of a pita-licious category because of the fact that AMD folding cards uses so much CPU.
And I think I found that overclocking the CPU more increases the PPD just a bit. It's not enough to make a difference for the competition... but it makes a difference within the category itself.

Don't run AMD cards on too slow CPUs, can't really say what's fast enough, but tried two P4 (631 and 660) and a Athlon 64 3500+ (single core, 2.2GHz). The Pentiums gave horrible low PPD on my 6970 (8.8k baseline tested with a 1055T@3.7), in the range of 2-4k PPD, the Athlon was slightly better at ~5k PPD.
I'd say you would want at least a dual core (triple or quad to keep the card at ~100% running two instances on one card hence using two cores, works for 69xx and 58xx at least) of say a Core2 or AthlonII/Phenom II.

Yeah. 1 experiement I did was setting affinity to just one core for the GPU client. Then later switched to 2 cores. When on 1 core, the CPU was taxed 100% and the PPD dropped considerably. Put it on 2 cores and the were taxed at something like 50-70% and the PPD was NEARLY normal. Still a drop though.

That's what my Q6700 is doing. I'm slightly annoyed that it takes TWO cpu cores to feed a single GPU (even true on my i7 - two threads anyways), but it is what it is...Mine uses both cores to their max - and I fold smp on the other two.
Anyone have a solution to that little trick not working after reboots? mine always goes nuts and refuses to fold at all until I reset v7 - i don't think it likes being set to run two on one gpu.

Ok. On my 1055T @ stock clocks I was netting about 8900 PPD. OC'd to 3.8ghz and now it's netting about 9050 PPD on the same WU.

On which GPU, the HD 6950? I'm temping in this category right now, so I'm just trying to figure out how my GPU is doing. I think at 800mhz core on my 6950 I was getting around 8k ppd, I have it up to 900mhz right now, and am getting 9k PPD. I will try OC'ing my i7 a bit, as it is running stock right now.

It's unlocked to 6970 right now. It's at 920mhz for now till I get the WC going.
