Stick with my PSU or replace it? The consequence of being cheap.

Hey guys. So, I bought a computer through Cyberpowerpc.com, which just arrived several days ago. Being that its the first custom made computer I have ever owned, I admit that I lack substantial knowledge, of picking proper parts for a computer. At the time of order i was unaware of the importance of a decent PSU, which led me to buy the cheapest option available.

My rig builds:

CPU: Intel I7 3700k
GPU: AMD Radeon 7970
Hard drive 1: 120gb ssd
Hard drive 2: 1tb hdd
PSU: Xtreme gear 800W ATX power supply
Factory overclocked with 10%

Some time after having placed the order, I stumpled upon some reviews and forum discussions of the Xtreme gear 800w PSU. Nearly all the reviews agreed that it was among the worst PSU's on the market.

So the problem i am currently facing is: Should I just go with my current PSU or spend alot of extra money and replace it with a better one. (Note: I haven't turned the system on yet, so i can't tell if the current power supply is even working).

Seeing as I don't know particularly much about PSU's, I don't know if it's worth giving a 100 bucks for a new PSU.

If you guys have any advice/suggestions, as to what i should do, it would be much appreciated.

You really don't have to spend A LOT of money to get a quality psu. You can find quality PSUs for 100-125$. I haven't heard of that particular brand but I've dealt with crappy PSUs before. It's not worth it trust me. It can wreck havoc on your system. I would reccomend Corsair/Seasonic or OCW.

With that rig how it is you will be perfectly fine with that power supply. If you max everything out you're looking at around ~400-450 watts. That's with running furmark and prime 95 at the same time. Granted that power supply is not very good but at least for that system there really isn't much to worry about since it doesn't pull much.

I agree. The PSU should be fine for what you have in that rig. Even if it is the biggest piece of crap PSU, it should be able to handle 500w being it is rated for 800w. You will probably never even get close to pushing 500w with that rig, unless you are folding while running some GPU bench and running all HDD's at once. Even then, I'd be shocked if it even got close to 500w. I say fire it up and test it out. If you start to show symptoms of PSU problems over time, then replace it.

Wow. I didn't think anyone would reply this fast to my post. I really appreciate all the advice!! I think i might try power on my system, once my new LCD screen arrives. If anything goes wrong, hopefully the worst case scenario will be, that i have to get another power supply. Reading all the negative forum posts about the Xtreme Gear PSU just spooked me into believing it would turn my rig into a 1700 dollar paper weight .

Well for future reference don't ever buy a custom prebuilt. I made that mistake and have regretted it ever since as a result of the amount of money i spent on it. Soon enough you will start swapping out parts and the original won't even be recognizable. haha. I know when it comes to my rig I have gone through three cases, two motherboards, three CPUs, three CPU coolers, three graphics cards, two sets of RAM, two power supplies, and I've added two more hard drives. Those are all of the parts that have gone through my rig and right now the only thing left is one of the hard drives.

I made the same exact mistake, i bought my first "custom pc" from cyberpowerpc. I still have their 750 watt xtreme gamer power supply and its running fine but that's most likely because my system isn't stressing it. The powersupply may be a piece of crap but its been running fine for me for the past 3 years.
