Quadcrossfire bottleneck question.

Hey OCN,

Im going to run Quad crossfire with a 6990 and 2 x 6970's soon, and im going to watercool them all,
well that is if my 6970 v1 fits te block im getting for it.
Im now running 6990 + 6970 @ pci2.0 x8 and performance is great.

But if i will add the 3rd card to the mix, if will be in a x4 pci-e 2.0 slot, will this bottleneck the other cards to x4 performance even if they are recognized as x8 ?
also running Very high res, 3x 1080p.

I would recommend against going quadfire for a number of reasons. The first being that you will likely bottleneck through either the pci-e x4 or just through the processor itself. The second reason is that most applications, games or otherwise, are only written for on or two GPUs, few are able to really use 3 and even fewer can use 4. Consequently the more cards you use the less of a gain you will see. And my final reason is that driver support with quadfire can be a real pain. I am not saying that you shouldn't add the third card, but it would be prudent to consider these potential drawbacks.

Well, the main reason for me to go quad, is because i already have 3 6970's and a 6990.
but i have a working 6970 in my 2nd rig, which will be replaced by a "faulty" one, and then add the third card to my mian rig, so it wont cost me anything basicly.
also how would my cpu be a bottleneck here, i'm running it at 4700mhz at the moment.
my main concern is that the chain of cards wil be as weak as the weakest link, which will be the x4 running one.

You're already running x4/x4 on the 6990 so I don't see an issue with frame time lags adding another 6970.

Never actualy thought about it that way, guess im good to go then, as my performance for trifire seems about right compared to similair rigs smile.gif

^^I do think it's all good as long as that 3rd slot is run off the cpu and not attached via the chipset. I don't know much about the extreme 6 and all of the data sheets on it are really vague. I get the impression that it's using some switch chip etc, but how... do not know?

Yeah i believe its run via a chip, but im not 100% sure, but if its run by a Chip would it make a big difference ?
Ah, i've just looked up on the asrock P67 extreme 6 page, and it seems like the last pci-e 2.0 x4 slot is running directly frm the P67 chip,
ther eis a PLX chip between the p67 chip and the x1 lanes tho.
So i hope thats a good thing that its running directly form the P67 chip.
