Isn't that only for flash memory? Maybe there is a small amount of mass created on a hard drive from the decay of quantum foam into gauge bosons.

Well, hard drives are magnetic, so I wouldn't expect that any mass be added when data is written. I believe that the video meant that the internet would weigh that much on flash memory.

A full HDD of data weighs more than a empty one. But to a non messurable degree. I read in a IT magazine that the entire internett actually weighs about 50 Grams. So when you think of how much bytes the internett is made of. Then you can imagine how little weight it adds thumb.gif

it's my understanding that no electrons are added or removed in hard drive technology, so the empty and full drive would have the same mass

I'm going to need an actual explanation, as my understanding of hard drives is this:

Credit cards store most of their mass on hard drives so your point it moot. tongue.gif
(but seriously, credit cards only contain an id which goes to an account, not the account and all the data itself and is static, thus it can't be used to answer his question)

Hard drives do not gain mass. I already answered your question 2 pages ago. As did Lord Xeb.

The video is not talking about hard drives, not even storage at all. I don't think he even uses the word hard drive once. What the video is talking about is the mass of the electrons required to represent 5 million terabytes.

Credit cards use a magnetic strip. So just like hard drives and cassette tapes, do not gain mass.
