did you watch the youtube vid?

It's not something that we can weigh, but still a an increase wink.gif.

The electricity used to store the data is what weighs, not the "data" itself.

It's a meta-weight!

(completely laymans understanding, this is way above my paygrade)

Hard drive density is measured in bits per square inch, the average of which is currently (5/2012) 744 gigabits per square inch. This means that a gigabyte of data will take up about 6.94 millimeter2. The weight of an area of a platter consists of the substrate (usually glass and ceramic) and the magnetic layer which actually holds the magnetic grains storing the data. The magnetic layer is usually made of a mostly cobalt alloy of 10-20 nm thickness. Assuming 10nm thickness to make the math easier, This gives us about 6.94 * 1013 nm3 of magnetic layer material for one gigabyte.
Given the density of cobalt, this means that we can approximate the weight at 0.617411 micrograms.
I'm not sure how much the substrate weighs, but it's almost certainly more than that.
2012 Update: This is all about drives that are shipping now - there is a lot of buzz about Seagate getting to 1 terabit per square inch recently, but that is a tech demo and not shipping quite yet.
Previously on "How much does a gigabyte weigh on a hard disk?"
2009: Areal Density 400 Gbit/in2 = 1.1518 micrograms (ref)
2010: Areal Density 541.4 GBit/in2 = 0.84817 micrograms (ref)
2011: Areal Density 625 GBit/in2 = 0.734966 micrograms (ref)
Nevermind; I misread that post and used the wrong value; you could theoretically ionize electrons to magnetize or demagnetize the cobalt with 10 watts.

We had a similar thread a few months ago if I recall correctly.

Basically flash memory gets slightly more mass since it gains more electrons to hold the charge. Electron have very small mass. Very small. However, hard drives have a read head with a magnetic field that changes and detects the orientation of bits on the magnetic material. I do not think electrons are added or subtracted from magnetic media, but could someone with more knowledge chime in to discuss? smile.gif

If my thinking's right every time one bit's changed then the hard drive will weigh a tiny bit more due to E=MC2. EDIT: Only while the magnet is swapping to the other polarization.

But full, no writing, and empty, no writing, should be the same.

This is like asking if a blank DVD weighs less that one that has a movie on it.No.But it has been established that electrons have mass. There could be a question created dealing with if a component weighs more or less based on electron charge. This is not one of those questions, and the bathrom scale would not aid in your proof.
