7950 @ $320 worth it?

Thread Starter
I is it worth it to get the MSI Twin Frozr III 7950 ($320 after rebate on newegg/amazon)?
Or should I save up for something better/wait for the gtx 660? I will be gaming at 1440p and it will be going in my sig rig.
I will most likely sell my 6870 and keep the 6850 as back up.

Side note: rebate ends today

320$ o.O

Got mine at 470$ when they were released smile.gif

I'd say go for it, was able to OC mine to 1.15Ghz easily, I get ~60-100 fps on BF3 multiplayer. The real question is, are you patient enough for the 660 or you want to pay a little more for a 7950?

You are severely underestimating the HD 7950. clock for clock its close to HD 7970 perf, maybe 3 - 5% slower. the MSI card comes at 880 Mhz stock clocks. You can easily get that to 1 - 1.05 Ghz at stock volts. With a little bit of voltage tweaking 1.1 - 1.15 Ghz is achievable. This card has the best price perf of all high end cards which includes GTX670, HD 7970, GTX 680.

here is a 900 Mhz HD 7950 overclocked to 1.2 Ghz and compared to HD 7970 (925 Mhz)

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/03/01/xfx_radeon_hd_7950_black_edition_video_card_review/8

Even at 1.15 Ghz this card will outperform the GTX 670 (1.25 Ghz) when you compare a wide range of games. thumb.gif

Jedi i would say first test your card for complete stability at stock clocks. which means running unigine heaven for maybe 1 hour and then 1 hour of gaming in BF3. Once you are sure the card is stable go for 1 Ghz at stock voltage. That itself would be pretty fast. If you want more performance go for 1.1 Ghz. if tests are not stable with artifacts or crashes step up voltage in small increments of 0.05V and check. For example if stock voltage is 1.1V, step up to 1.15v. Don't apply too much voltage because heat and temps will increase quite rapidly. You should keep the card below 75C in Heaven and BF3. that should be your goal. thumb.gif

At 1,237 V, could go higher, the cooler is great; but it's starting to get noisy for me (~65% fan speed). Be warned tough, MSI had mine at 0,993V by default, BF3 multiplayer did crash my gpu (no other game tough). Just bump it to the default 1,093V of HD 7950 (no idea why they decreased it that much).

Anyway, love it, stay quiet and cool when gaming. I just kick my overclock when it needs it (3dmark, BF3, etc.), because my other games barely use 40% of the gpu (@1080p) biggrin.gif

With these low price... I think I'll wait for the 8xxx to come out and grab another one for xFire later this year smile.gif
