~$250 for a GPU (Figuring out if it would be worth it to upgrade from a GTX 460)

Thread Starter
Ok. So. I'm pondering a GPU upgrade. Last year in July, I built my sigrig. It started out with Ubuntu, my Dad's old 4:3 monitor, and my brothers old KB+Mouse. I eventually built it to what it is currently. Now, a year later, and addicted to BF3, I am thinking about a GPU upgrade from my GTX 460. Once the 660 drops, I'm planning on comparing it to the 7850, and which ever one rules BF3, I'll rock it. But wait. I'm fairly satisfied with the performance of my 460.

If I upgraded, what type of performance increase am I looking at?
How close to max? (For BF3)
Noise wise, what would the difference be?
Power wise?

If I don't spend money on that, I could buy a new subwoofer. Or a Datovac and movies. Or a new PSU and case+blu-ray player. Or Speaker stands. Or media. Or on my other, expensive hobbie. *thank god my parents pay for that one*

So it all boils down to this.

  • Would the performance increase justify upgrading my GPU?
  • Would it be justified over a different upgrade?
  • Any clues on how the GTX 660 will stack up to the 7850? (Or a launch date?)
  • How do the drivers stack up?
  • What would I do with my 460? I can't sell it on here (REP) and I don't have another computer to put it in.

Thanks so much!

~raptorxrx

Quick Edit: I am not set on upgrading, I am just strongly pondering it at this point. I might just sit out another generation though. Than I'll save up more, and see what happens when the 8000 series and 700 series drop. I just have this want...

Have you contemplated sli? If you bought another 460 then you would have money to spend left over on other things, and quite good performance.

Actually, I did. Once I realized some difficulty's though, I crossed it off my list.

  • My motherboard is non SLI compatible.
  • My PSU is meh, and becomes un-efficient over 300w out of the wall (what it will pull currently Folding)
  • My GPU is aging tech. I don't really want to put more money into a several year old card.
  • I don't think I want to risk Micro stuttering, or other driver issues. (And the noise.)

On the motherboard.
The day I purchased, the motherboard I planned on buying jumped up in price. It became out of my budget, and I bought a board I didn't research very much, or read much about.

On the PSU, found a great combo, it had decent "customer" reviews, and I bought it. Only later did I learn about JonnyGuru and HardwareSecrets. In my defense, it was my first build, and I didn't get any help from a forum or a family member.

I'd say that My 560 Ti is pretty good when it comes to BF3, Here's a review from Linus @ NCIX regarding it

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcGe-VmgI5k

And you can get them pretty cheap(Think sub $200 range)

I'd offer to sell you mine but I don't have enough reps either to sell and I don't want to break the OCN ToS. Hopefully this helps.

As for your 460, you could always use it as a dedicated PhysX card. That could net you a little more FPS overall and if you do BOINC or Folding you can use it for that as well.
The 460 is still a great card for 1080p and lower resolutions, but if you want to go cheap and get a nice performance boost, get the 480 or a 570. The 660 has still no benches out, so we cannot judge how well would it do, but i would compare it to a single 470 if the gtx 670 numbers are any indication.

400 and 500- series cards, while old, are still strong. My old GTS 450 SLI setup blew my mind (coming from my 9400 GT) and my new GTX 470 SLI setup has more power to run any game @ 2048x1156, run BOINC/F@H, and still ask for more. Plus you can't deny the price (i got both my 470's plus waterblocks on $280. Not bad if i say so myself biggrin.gif)

Also, there is nothing against using that 460 for PhysX/folding. Fermis are darned good on the Cuda apps.

OP is your budget strictly USD 250 or can you go a bit higher to say USD 320. cause there is a fantastic deal on MSI HD 7950 OC for USD 320 after rebates

http://www.amazon.com/MSI-R7950-TWIN-FROZR-3GD5/dp/B007NG3WR2/

clock for clock HF 7950 is close to HD 7970. This card will be a big improvement over the GTX 460. HD 7950 OC cards can do 1 - 1.05 Ghz on stock volts and 1.1 - 1.15 Ghz with voltage tweaking. here is a HD 7950 OC (900 Mhz) overclocked to 1.2 Ghz and compared with HD 7970 (925 Mhz)

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/03/01/xfx_radeon_hd_7950_black_edition_video_card_review/8

think about it. you will be happy you spent the extra money and be satisified for a long time to come. thumb.gif

I agree with Starbomba; the 460 is still a capable card and a step up to something like a 7850 may not really be worth it. Wait for the 660 to come out, or try to score a stronger card if you cant wait.

That stronger card may just be a GTX480, Newegg has them in stock for $199

This is the OP. I'm in a situation with the Forum right now, I couldn't PM on my old account, so I had to create a new one to PM the mods to sort things out.

I sold my GTX 460 today. That leaves me with US $210 on a GPU. I'll stretch to $250 still though.

Now it is what card. I won't go over $250, so what would you say the best card in the range is. I'm currently looking used, new, old tech, new tech. What do you guys think?

6950 can trade blows with the 560ti, but the 2 GB of VRAM will help if you're gaming at resolutions at or above 1080p with AA and all the fancy shmancy eye candy thumb.gif

Plus you get two free games, which you can either sell or use
