If you're playing 1080p or lower it is enough. Hell, my old SLI GTS 450 setup was more than enough to run most games on high/ultra @ 1080p, and my SLI GTX 470 barely uses over 900 MB @ 2048x1156 except in Skyrim.

If you have a USD 50 gift card from amazon go for this card

Sapphire HD 7870 OC - usd 310
http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-PCI-Express-Graphics-11199-03-20G/dp/B007JCNOY6/

Its a fantastic card. It overclocks to 1.15 - 1.2 Ghz and is close to HD 7950 (900 Mhz) perf at those speeds.

here is a sapphire HD 7870 OC card review. its overclocked to 1270 Mhz , though thats a very high overclock.

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/04/26/sapphire_hd_7870_oc_edition_video_card_review/

You want a signficant improvement from the GTX 460. Don't go for anything lesser. thumb.gif

While it may be okay for those games its far from future proof for upcoming games. Try playing Max payne 3, it uses 1.5gb on my rig.

Memory usage is not perfect indicator of required vram. If youre max payne 3 game actually required 1.5gb, Every 1gb or 1.25gb graphics solution couldn't hope to hit more then 10 fps, yet many do. Memory usage overshoots because graphics solutions with over the required vram dont flush unnecessary data.

Max Payne 3, use FXAA Very High if you're low on memory, or simply turn textures to high and then put 2x msaa. then next turn shadows to high and put 4x msaa. You'll notice the game running slow, so if you have 1Gb, you have it for a REASON and your card doesn't have juice for higher AAs. Plus the AA is broken for some people, one of them is me.

Hey guys, I'm back! (Thank you mods, it means a ton to me!)

As far as what I did, I'm not satisfied. I sold my GTX 460 and bought a 7870. It turns out for me that the upgrade was not worth it. I honestly didn't notice the difference. The GTX 460 is still a great card, it isn't that powerful anymore (never was meant to be) but it doesn't stutter or let me down in anything anyways. It turns out that the buyer wasn't happy with it though, so I got it back, and am returning the 7870.

One complication. When the buyer sent it back, he included the accessories in the anti-static bag the card was in. This ripped off two of the transitors/whatever things on top of the card, rendering it useless. Now I don't know what to do. Do I buy another 460? The 7870 was defective because it would fail BF3 after ~1:30 minutes of playing at stock. Computer would freeze, hard reset had to due it. Windows said it was drivers freezing.

If you feel confident enough, you can try soldering them on your own, but if not, it may be time for a new card. Considering the prices of Fermi cards lately there is little sense getting another 460, unless you buy it used on the Marketplace (you can get them for roughly $100). If you plan to buy new, and plan to keep the same budget, a 560 Ti or a 570 may be in order.
