Problem with ASUS 6870

Thread Starter
I recently built my first computer from scratch. Here are the full specs:
Intel core i5-3570k (With CM Hyper 212+)
ASUS P8Z77-V LX
ASUS HD6870
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 1 x 8GB
OCZ 600w ModXStream-PRO PSU
500 GB Western Digital Blue HDD
32 GB Patriot Torqx 2 SSD

Here's the problem:
I'm using the DVI to HMDI adapter that came with the GPU and an HDMI cable that's plugged into the monitor, but the monitor (ASUS ML228H) won't detect an HDMI signal. Everything runs fine on the Intel 4000 HD graphics when I plug the HDMI cable into my mobo. I have downloaded and installed all of the latest drivers off of ASUS's site and I tried the AMD site. I also tried changing my graphics in my BIOS to PCIe, but that didn't work. The GPU is getting power because the fan is spinning and there's a red LED on the GPU that's turned on.

Help would be appreciated.

did you try cycling through the input connections on the monitor? and maybe set the AMD driver to autodetect monitors via Catalyst Control Center

Use a DVI cable, not an HDMI cable + adapter. thumb.gif

Well I don't have a DVI to DVI cable and my monitor doesn't have a DVI input.

Really? Checking your monitor specs via Newegg says you should have a DVI port on that monitor, unless I misread it. thinking.gif

( edit )

Yep, I misread it. tongue.gif

Ohk so try this - are you sure in your BIOS that you've set the correct output for video, for PCI-E first instead of onboard or PCI?

Yes, it's set to PCIe in my BIOS.

I appreciate your guys' effort, but it's still not being recognized.

If you're getting HDMI out from the integrated GPU (Intel HD) via HDMI then you know the monitor works. Can you take the card out and try it in a friend's computer or another computer in your house?

Find out if the card is working properly that way; if it is then maybe that port is bad for some reason. Otherwise you can always RMA the card.

I unfortunately can't try the card in another computer, their hardware would be insufficient to make it work

I tried the other PCIe port on my motherboard, but that didn't work.

On the phone, the ASUS rep told me it's possible it's not getting enough power, but using most wattage calculators tell me I need a PSU around 460w (I have 600w). Regardless I tried running the system with the bare minimum (CPU + fan, one RAM stick, boot SSD, GPU, and of course PSU), and what do you know, it still didn't work.

I think I'll just RMA it.
