Low power/quiet but fast setup!

Hi all

So ive just got an i5 3570k and kept it at stock but undervolted to 0.9v and its rock solid. the idea is im trying to build a really silent (my case has soundproofing) setup with as few fans as possible (I have 2 intakes and 1 exhaust). Id like it to be as powerful as possible though so im looking at high efficiency cards, like the 7870/7950 or possibly a gtx 670.

im wondering how something like two of these 7870s would go in crossfire in a case with decent but not great airflow. or maybe i should look for reference cards instead?

basically my goals are:
1. bang for buck
2. quiet and cool
3. as fast as possible

Those cards aren't loud. Only time it would be noticeable would be when they're working hard. Even then it isn't bad.

Have you considered water cooling? It's more quiet, but a bit more expensive. tongue.gif Definitely guaranteed quiet and cool.

I dont feel like spending the money haha so wc is not an option for me. ive heard they're quiet yeah but do you think 2 nonref cards would be alright with only moderate airflow. dont really want to warm my case up to much

Yeah I have a reference 680. It really isn't bad at all. Of course it would be better if it had an aftermarket cooler, but hey thats what you get for getting reference.

The difference between reference/aftermarket is probably 5-10 degrees difference. It really isn't bad at all. All GPUs get hot. As for your entire case getting hot, it probably wont happen. The reference cards have the exhaust going out the back of the card and out the case. Don't worry about temps. If you are worried about it getting hot, get an aftermarket card.
