Is it OK? 3570k build

Intel Core i5 3570K $245
MSI Z77A-GD80 Motherboard with Thunderbolt $305
G.Skill Ripjaws Z F3-2400C10D-8GZH 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 $124

Corsair HX-650 Power Supply $129

MSI Radeon HD7950 3GB Overclocked $429

Crucial M4 SSD 64GB $99

Already have an ft02 w/out air penetrator fans because it's 2 or so years old, a noctua nh-u12p which i'll need to get 1155 brackets for, and a mildly damaged 1080p monitor(, hopefully i can replace that one day soon).

I like the mobo for the layout, looks and features. It is pretty expensive but should oc well.

I've been told ram doesn't offer much of a real performance boost.. but if not why even sell ram above 1600mhz? If it's true i can drop those 2400mhz ripjaws for some 1600 and save >$50. Although the ram i've listed also claims full z77 compatibility. Not sure if that makes any difference, but in the past i've had ram that would not run at rated specs because of this. (I bought 1066mhz ddr2 ram that never worked on my motherboard, all oc's on core2 being with the fsb didn't make things easier.)
Also i can get trident for exactly the same price. The only difference seems to be the cooler.

Not sure about the 7950. I could get a 7870 with a better cooler (quieter, although the fortresses 3 180mm fans aren't exactly quiet anyway) for less $$.

The hx650 seemed to be priced well for a modular. I'll need to buy properly sleeved extensions though, the cable on it are ugly. I'm assuming 650w will be enough with an average oc. I won't be adding another 7950 (not in the next 2 years) and i don't think any other devices I could add in the future would draw much.

Uses include gaming, solving the mysteries of the universe & all the usual stuff.
It adds up to 1.3k, can't go over that. But I guess I'm wondering if anything I've chosen is reasoned wrong. If money has been assigned well to each component. If i can save money etc.

Drop the 2400mhz and go to 1600mhz, you won't see a difference outside of benchmarks. I would also try and find a 120GB SSD, it shouldn't cost but another $30, actually the money you save by swapping memory you can put towards the 120GB SSD. All in all, the build is monster and will perform very well for you.

I agree. You can get pretty much the same performance with 1600 memory. You'll save money.

Will you be adding an HDD into that system?

I also agree with the posts above that it's better to get 1600mhz ram. You can also easily OC it to higher speeds like what I did.

The motherboard is also kinda expensive, I think it's because of the thunderbolt connector? You can just get an add-on card for that in the future when you're actually going to use thunderbolt.

Oh yeah I forgot. Please don't spend 305 dollars on that motherboard. You can get a MUCH better board. It's only 305 dollars because of thunderbolt.

I would check out the ASUS boards if you are looking for great performance, durability, and great looks. The P8z77-v Deluxe is a great board. Its about 260 dollars and has much more features than this board. Plus I think it looks cooler smile.gif

IF you want to wait a little longer, wait for the new ROG board coming out soon. Has a black/red theme and it just is a crazy good motherboard for overclockers and gamers.

For about $20 more, you can go with the Agility 3 120gb which is kinda slower, but is double the capacity. Real world performance though, I doubt you'd notice the speed difference.

Forgot to say i'm Australia. Mobos and graphics card especially, and everything else is more expensive.

Oh okay. Still seems weird they'd offer something with no noticeable advantage but I believe you smile.gif. Thanks. Not sure whether to get ripjaws or ares. There's only $3 difference. Actually i still don't understand this. G.skill offers 1600mhz memory as cheap as $35, should i just get the cheapest?

I do have some hdd/old ssd lying around. Should do for now. I think the board is expensive because of where I live.

The asus board is even more (by about $10) But does seem sexy enough. Doesn't have thunderbolt although not sure i'd have a use for it anyway. The asus has way more on the io. Thanks.

Get these: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=186_912&products_id=19632

They're G. Skill Ares. It's 1600 CAS 9 and if you go any faster than that, it wouldn't really matter much(the ones you posted are 1866 cas 9 and 1600 cas 8)

It's also about $20 cheaper and they're low profile, so you could fit a large cooler and it wouldn't hit the ram.

Plus, the Ares are good Overclockers if you'd wish to do that, I myself use them and I'm running it on 2133 CAS 10, from 1600 CAS 9 stock

lol it is really confusing. There are some kits saying z77 compatibility and intel xmp 1.3. But after searching it seems xmp is not important and that any dual channel ram should run fine.

So I will go with those ares you have listed. thanks:)

edit:found i can get the motherboard cheaper from a store near me if they have stock. And get the 7950 with a better cooler.
