Looking for 7970 GPU Water Cooling Help - Page 2

These are the same cards I just picked up to put my EK FC7970 blocks on. Under the cooler though is a kind of uni-sink that covers the memory modules. Does this come off for me to place the thermal pads on? I've only seen pics so far of the Sapphire 7970 OC without the cooler and am wondering if anybody here has personal experience with putting blocks on this particular card?

Personally I'd recommend Heatkiller for the waterblocks. More expensive but the performance is good and they are very, very reliable, high quality products. German engineering wins every time. Cost to performance ratio it's hard to beat XSPC, but they aren't the best brand out there.
Here's some radiator comparisons.
And here.
And there are others scattered about the forums. Get something to drink before you dig into the data. The differences in performance are going to remain pretty much the same from one style/brand of radiator to another regardless of size, since the design stays uniform through that line of products. They are just either larger or smaller.

Thanks I really appreciate all the help... Water cooling is far more complicated then I originally thought... So much info to read through too.

The heatkiller water blocks look sweet, here is what I picked out.
Heatkiller

Questions:
Should I get the optional backplate for the GPU Waterblocks?
What kind of performance inc would I see with backplates?

Remove the heatsink man. Thermal pads don't fit heatsinks too well ya know. Btw, you have to remove all the heatsinks on the OC.

Do they just come off or are they screwed on? Haven't cracked my actual cards yet, just looking at pictures...

Backplates are just going to keep the card from sagging, and I would highly suggest you get them, since the block weighs about 3 times as much as the Sapphire cooler you're going to take off. I probably should have said that the backplates are going to be the main reason the heatkiller blocks prove to be the most expensive.

Killer backplates though, The stainless steel is amost an eighth of an inch thick. You don't have to worry about having some screws feel tighter than the other during installation because the backplate is flexing. Because it simply won't flex. Ever. Unless you feel the need to run it over with an SUV.

I just noticed the reservoir that comes with the kit is actually part of the pump, should i get a separate reservoir? Or is this fine? from what i read I want the res installed above the pump... so not sure how a pump/res combo would work, do i install it at the bottom or top?

Only if the res and pump are separate should you worry about installing the res above the pump. Really in my opinion a submerged pump is optimal, as it makes the pump virtually 100% silent. Pretty much have to press your ear up against the reservoir to hear it if it's running correctly and doesn't have any air trapped in it.
