Live streaming - need hardware suggestions

Hi all,

Going to a dodgeball tournament next weekend and I would like to stream the event on livestream or ustream, whatever I find works better for us.

I currently have:
  • Macbook Pro 15" Ivy Bridge 2.7GHz, 8GB Ram, Intel 520 240GB SSD
  • Canon t2i (yea, I'm not expecting this to work.. but hey, if it does...

What I've been looking at:

Basically, don't worry about the internet connection or the laptop. I need to know what I need, on a budget as far as the camera goes (maybe my t2i would work??). I have seen posts that using the t2i would cause it to heat up during video mode - but is that if you're live streaming AND recording on the camera itself? Would I be able to just use livestream to go back to the events or download the files? Or maybe use an application on the notebook to record instead of on the camera itself.. and live stream?

Any suggestions would be appreciated

t2i will not work.

just use ustream. i use to to stream basketball games at my school. they are watchable later on after streaming even with the free account. i upgraded to ustream producer pro and it gives a lot more ability to changes settings on the stream and add graphics a lot easier so you would be able to actually do a scoreboard which is important for a live stream.

i have never recorded while streaming as we use a second camera for that. just make sure that your camera has a clean output and doesnt display that its recording while streaming.

that black magic intensity extreme is beyond overkill for what you are doing. i have never worked with one but from what i see that is basically an encoder and does not record. you would still be recording to your computer.

Not to be an ass but I did not get any suggestions for what I'm looking for ... a camera.

Already bought the BlackMagic Intensity Extreme. I can buy a Canon VIXIA HF10 for $150 ... not sure if it's worth it or what.

and im not trying to be an ass either but be more specific then geez. honestly not sure if i want to help you anymore. just ask and leave out saying that your not trying to be an ass because saying it makes you one.

considering i am the only person that regularly helps people in this section have fun figuring the rest out on your own thumb.gif

canon HF10 is fine for what you are doing since i assume your level of experience is zero since you are even asking for help.

and yes i do see where you requested camera suggestions followed by an entire paragraph of questions involving the stream. considering you are already "looking" at that camera just like you are "looking" at the encoder that you already bought i can only assume you are hoping for someone to give you positive feedback on your suggestions. considering everything you asked after the camera part im pretty sure you have no clue what you are doing and I just want to reinforce how much of a waste of my time it will be to help any further than this post. have a nice night... ass wink.gif

Let's not start an internet e-thug contest here - here's a hug and kiss, get over yourself. Don't need to go all karate hipster on my ass. You're posting on a forum where people ask for help on a daily basis. I don't think AV is an everyday kind of knowledge area, hence why I even post. Don't put yourself above anyone because you know how to hold a camera.

Now on to my point, I'm playing in the tournament. It's not something that's going to be commentated on or even have a scoreboard. I want something reasonable that won't hiccup while a ball is being thrown between 65 and 85mph ... obviously, I don't know what I'm doing. Again, I wouldn't ask if I did.

So please, if anyone else has some insight in to a camera that I could use with this setup (maybe even a suggestion for a rental somewhere in Chicago?), please do post. I will be using LiveStream as it is compatible with the BlackMagic and seems pretty simple (plug your camera in and ProCaster is supposed to recognize it..).

eh? seriously... video is far from being hipster

go buy whatever lol any camera that has AV output will work preferably through firewire since your on a mac. question answered. and honestly above statement makes you more of an ass so you're on your own at this point. im not putting myself above anyone but my many years of video experience definitely amounts to more than knowing how to hold a camera buddy. so im going to say buzz off in a nice way thumb.gif

oh and i know what im talking about as i have tested several cameras with ustream over the past few years of working with all the ustream platforms and with or without tricaster as well. problem solved thread done. you are welcome.

also no way you have the budget to buy any pro gear so just get a cheap $200 or less camera
