Nvidia Inspector and my Geforce 450 GTS quality vs. performance trade-off?

Thread Starter
I've tried the Sparse-Grid Antialiasing as seen here at OCN. But is this the best switches for my Geforce 450 GTS when I want a balanced quality vs. performance trade-off? Is there a good tutorial? I personally like the idea of sparse grids because it reminds me of a beautiful girl.

No, I would not say that sparse-sample grid AA is the 'best tradeoff'. The best trade-off is FXAA, if it works for the game you're using it on. The GTS450 is not a very powerful card, and FXAA gives a much, much better IQ improvement relative to the performance hit vs. any other kind of AA available. Next best will be a low level MSAA (i.e. 2xAA). Things like the sparse grid AA or transparency AA are better suited to high-end cards with a lot of 'power to spare', as they are very resource-intensive AA methods.

Hmm, well I'm programmer and I know spatial index and quadtrees and I use a lot of sparse grid algorithm and although it's hard to understand it actually speeds up my calculations. The only thing is that it needs a precalculation of the spatial data so this part is resource intense but you need it only the first time or when you add new data.

4x MSAA + FXAA is the sweet spot IMO, because FXAA is bad at smoothing things in the background.

4x MSAA + 4x TrSSAA was 60% faster than 4x SGSSAA in Crysis for me.

I only use FXAA personally... there are a lot of critics regarding FXAA but I think it does strongly antialiase and has awesome performance.

From the wikipedia: A sparse regular grid sample pattern is a subset of samples that are chosen from the regular grid sample pattern. As with the regular grid, attribute evaluation is simplified due to regular spacing. The method is less computationally expensive due to having a fewer number of samples. Edge optimization is good for screen aligned edges, and image quality is good for a moderate number of multisamples.

So in theory it should help increasing the perfomance? Why is practical slower then FXAA?

Hmm, FXAA has awesome performance because it isnt really an anti alias alogrithm, its just a post process blur filter applied to everything.

A little FXAA isn't so bad IMO, especially when you use 4x MSAA and touch of FXAA for smoothness, however, I think FXAA as a sole method is horrendous, It completely destroys any image clarity and instead of a crisp, clear, frame, you end up with something that's a kin to looking through the wrong glasses, it's just the typical shortcut devs will take instead of trying to push the envelope. I suppose consoles completely expended resources have something to do with FXAA's arrival.

It's actually only applied to areas with high contrast AFAIK, but that's unimportant.

Regardless, FXAA is actually a good imitation of real SGSSAA at close range (again, it's bad for things in the background). FXAA does not look too blurry, games are really too sharp without AA. MSAA + FXAA is not crisper or clearer than FXAA alone, it's the opposite.

FXAA is definitely a better way to go than MSAA, which doesn't smooth textures.

I think when it comes to FXAA vs MSAA, a LOT comes down to the engine and the implementation of each type. For example I much prefer MSAA to FXAA in Skyrim (FXAA has the aforementioned 'blurry mess' factor going on a bit), but in Max Payne 3, FXAA is implemented very well and works better than even 4xMSAA, with like zero performance hit vs a HUGE hit with 4xMSAA ...

I stand by what I said earlier though ... for balance of perf hit vs. IQ improvement, FXAA is unrivaled if it's remotely well-implemented, and since we're talking about a GTS450 to begin with ... I would recommend against trying to pull off sparse-grid or other really 'high-end' AA methods on anything but the oldest of games, cause you won't have the juice to pull 'em off. Even 2x sparse grid AA can drop your average fps by 30%, and your mins by like 50% in some cases.

On a related note, I'm using FXAA forced through NVCP right now on Spec Ops - The Line, and it works phenomenally to get rid of the (otherwise depressingly omnipresent) jaggies. The game has no in-game AA option, and forcing MSAA + TRSSAA through NVCP did practically nothing to remove aliasing in that game, but FXAA made a night and day difference without impacting FPS at all, really. And there's no 'blurry mess' action going on at all.
