Destruction is more detailed in Frostbite 2, but the environments didn't allow the same kind of destruction, because it wouldn't work if you could take down the 3-story buildings that make up the edges of some maps. Frostbite 2 could do what Frostbite 1.5 did in BC2 and more, but DICE chose not to do it. A lot of the buildings that are built like BC2 buildings were (not on the edge of the map and relatively small) can be taken down which proves that it was a design decision.

This.

And they dumbed it down so a wider audience of machines could actually run the game.

That is another good point. The huge amount of dynamic destruction available (compared to, say, a COD game) is very taxing on both internet connections and servers, because it has to be synchronized to all players (so that the bad guy will actually die when the rubble hits him). Reducing the total destruction allows a server to run more sessions of the game, increasing profit for game server providers and ensuring a good relationship between DICE and the server providers.

It is worth noting that Frostbite 2 is also the engine behind NFS The Run and the upcoming C&C Generals 2. The game engine has little say in the resulting game, only the developer's use of the engine matters. TheBirdman's post doesn't make sense, because BF3 is only one way to use the engine and the engine itself can not be "CoD centric".

Also, it seems that a lot of the buildings that do collapse take more hits to do so. The positive side of this is that it allows for higher ticket games to make longer use of the buildings before there's no longer any cover at all on the map.

Short answer, YES.

I liked BC2 better, BF3 and Frostbite 2 felt more COD centric. thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

The engine is really not responsible for it being more CoD-centric (although I definitely disagree with that BF3 is anything like CoD). Bad Company 2 could have been made the same way if DICE chose to.
