2.1 Budget Speaker Setup

Thread Starter
I am a high school student and I am looking for a low priced 2.1 setup for my room, and for when people come over. Under $200 would be nice, and I will be hooking them up to my laptop through an Asus Xonar U3. I will be listening to some rock music and electronica, so some decent bass would be nice, and will be purchasing them on singaporean ebay. I currently own the grado sr60i headphones, and I really like the sound signature if that is any indication... If you are recommending passive speakers, I will probably just hook them up to the Lepai TA2020, since it seems to be a reasonably priced amplifier, and I don't need them to be pumped up that loudly...

I do have some extra cash to spend, but keep in mind that I want to keep this good bang for the buck. I can get a better USB DAC if it is worth while and I can also go for a 2 bookshelf + sub setup, but I believe the TA2020 is only a T-amp and will not support a sub, however if you can make an affordable recommendation, I will try and jump on it.

I bought this at bestbuy when they had some crazy sales, it replaced some crappy 7.1 thing from logitech I had.

It kicks ass, it is much LOUDER, and clearer, I'm hearing things in songs I don't even hear in my car stereo. Putting up the bass is crazy, I don't even go 1/4 of the way and my walls are already thumping.

You can wire any amp to a sub and run speakers off sub as long as sub has speaker wire in/out wink.gif Link in sig has global inputs by peeps running TA2020s with bookshelf speakers thumb.gif

I agree with the Klipsch Promedia 2.1's. I have them and they are just fantastic. One thing to keep in mind though, if you want a warranty you HAVE to buy through one of their certified retailers. Best Buy and Amazon are both certified but make sure you're not buying through a third-party on Amazon.

I got mine BNIB on Ebay for $90 since my friend bought his at Best Buy and I figured I could just swap serial number stickers with him if need be.

Will blow the socks off that Klipsch system.

I'm running the same setup but instead of a single pair of B652's I have 2 pairs and a old center I had laying around. Feeding into my old Yamaha HTR-5640, sending the sound though my sound card with the multi channel inputs. BF3 sounds AWESOME with the sound up load, vary immersive.

Also your gonna what that Subwoofer to fill in all the bass notes as the speakers stop at 70hz. They give a nice punchy sound which goes perfect with a sub. Just use the high power inputs to connect it, won't regret it.

Unfortunately, I can find neither any Dayton Audio products, nor the Kilpsch Promedia 2.1 Ebay sellers that are located in Singapore... As I was doing some quick searches for speakers, I was able to find a lot of speakers from other brands. I'll try and look up some speakers that are a good deal, and post them on here, maybe you guys could just point me in the right direction... I want to try and find sellers that are in Singapore, because if they are in the US or something, the shipping is worth more than the product itself...

I found some Kenwood KVS-300 floor standing speakers for about $100 on Ebay. Does anyone have any input on those? Also, does anyone have any advice for me on what to look for on ebay?

Although taking into consideration the recommended Ohms and RMS Wattage ratings would be much more feasible if you value long term life of your equipment. thumb.gif

After some quick searches, I found some good speaker deals. Which pair do you think is the best bang for the buck? I will just be running these by themselves, without a subwoofer, so keep in mind that I still want a pair with decent bass output.

Mission 731 ~$145
Kenwood KVS-300 ~$100
KEF Q50 ~$240
Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 ~$280
JBL TLX 12 ~$135
JBL Control 5 ~$160

Without a sub you best hit a pair of bookshelf can can extend low or if u have the space, floor standers are great! I had tested the TA2020 with some Kenwood 92dB floor standers with great results wink.gif
