I am looking for graphics card reccomendations

Thread Starter
I play GTA IV, FSX, and occasionally crysis 1 and 2. I want this card to possibly be able to handle the next grand theft auto game.

Right now I get these stutters and crashes. There is plenty of RAM, and cpu power. The next culprit is the GPU which was outdated even for the video game.

I was thinking the 550 Here 2GB

or this one here

I have been a bit out of the market so I will be looking into some more things as I read up on things. Also I will be probably waiting a few weeks to purchase this as I do more research, will there be any announcements for new GPU's I should be looking for? Also a SSD is going into my rig later this week.

Get a HD 6870 or GTX 560. the GTX 550 ti is an entry level card and much slower than the HD 6870 or GTX 560. HD 6870 cards are available starting at USD 150. GTX 560 cards are also available in the same price range for USD 160 and above. thumb.gif

But if you can spend USD 200 - USD 220 go for HD 7850. these cards have good OC headroom and can clock 1 Ghz easily at stock voltage and give you GTX 570 performance for much lesser heat, noise.and power consumption.

If you play fsx your going to want a nvidia card, with at least 1.5gb Vram

I would suggest these HD7770 Ghz edition. Same cost and it will wipe the floor with the GTX550ti

HD7770 also goes for $130-140, similar price with GTX550 but a lot faster.
Its about equal to a GTX560 in speed.

If you prefer nvidia and would rather have the slower GTX550 for the same price,
make sure you get the 1GB version because 2GB would be wasted.
GTX550 is not fast enough to utilize more than 1GB ram

I heard that AMD had problems with micro-stuttering back in the 4 series. Did they fix that since then?

Any HD 7000 series card will work with a PCI-E 2.0 slot. they are backwards compatible. and there will be no performance loss because a PCI-E 2.0 16X slot has more than enough bandwidth for a HD 7850.

Alright, this will probably be my last gfx card for this board, and might go onto my next build sometime in the next two years. I will have to keep an eye out for a 7850 then, not goign to bother with the 7770 series

What about the drivers?

Also what am I looking for in equivalence to both these cards. I know some have stream processors and all that. Can anyone explain that stuff to me?

HD 7850 uses the GCN architecture. This architecture is much superior to the HD 6900 series VLIW4 architecture. HD 7850 has 1024 stream processors. It comes with 860 Mhz clock speeds. In the latest DX 11 games its performance is superior to HD 6950 cards though in older games its similar in performance. Perf wise this is how it relates to other cards

HD 6950 <= HD 7850 (860 Mhz) < HD 6970 = GTX 570 = HD 7850 (1 Ghz) < HD 7870 ( 1 Ghz) < HD 7850 (1.2 Ghz) = GTX 580

HD 7000 drivers are fine. if you buy HD 7850 get the latest version catalyst 12.6 drivers.
