HAHAHA! Yea the D doesn't stand for "Dual Core" like the Pentium D's Ronin. It's just the generation of Celeron man...

The LOWEST END Dual core intel makes is the PD 805 and that's being phased out now...

The "D" indicates it's a Prescott core Celeron, to my knowledge. It's not dual core, sadly...

EDIT: Celeron D isn't as bad as most think. My 340 @ 3.75GHz is roughly equivalent to a Northwood @ 3.2GHz, with 512KB L2 and no HT, for math work anyway. Not great for games, but OK for folding etc .

ok, i checked my socket about half an hour ago before i posted this thread and i have a socket 478 i think i will igve it a try... i should be getting his old machine by friday or sometime over the weekend.

but what performance gain will i get right now im running at 2.8ghz

It should work, based on what ASUS has posted about your mobo. Just drop it in, clear your cmos, and try it out

Can't hurt anything.

And we won't be able to judge how it will perform until we know the clock on the P4 and it's specs, get that info first.

Performance ∞ 1/Run Time = Frequency x IPC/Instruction Count

Using that logic, for average real world processing, the processor will only be faster due to its additional clock speed (if any), cache and bus speed.

For direct performance (i.e. ALU/FPU processing) only clock speed will effect the direct processing power, if both processors are on the same architectural base i.e. Intel Netburst.

ok i got the spec. its a Pentium 4 with hyper threading technology at 2.8ghz
now that you have the specs what performance increase will there be

Few people will understand what I have written. It is a calculation to determine the relative performance of a processor using known values.

Performance ∞ 1/Run Time = Frequency x IPC/Instruction Count

To determine the processing power of your computer (performance) you must:
  • Know The Run Time
  • Know The Frequency
  • Know The Instructions Per Clock Cycle (IPC)
  • Know The Instruction Count

If you know these values you can determine the relative performance of your processor for direct calculations.

I placed that equation in my post as it proves that an Intel Celeron of the same clock speed is capable of exactly the same performance in calculations as a Pentium 4 processor of equal clock frequency.

In the real world however this is not the case as cache and bus speed will come into the equation
