To get a new receiver or sound card?

Thread Starter
I just recently hooked up a family members old Technics Sa-101 to my computer. Now my rig is running the stock sound card and I must say that it plays decently. I am using the line out (green plug) and the cable splits into the red and white plug. It sounds okay, and I must admit when I am watching tv on the computer it sounds pretty good because the speakers are actually aligned better then when I am sitting at the desk. But that don't bother me too much, it is still better then my old computer speakers.

Now I wanted to for the longest time get another vintage receiver and possibly fix it up myself and start getting a background in electronics. The receiver I was looking at was a Sansui 771 or something similar. For speakers I am running bookshelf speakers with replacement drivers in them.

I was thinking of leaning more toward a better sound card for now and wait for a better deal on a vintage receiver. I was looking at the Asus Xonar DX. Right in my price range and I have no more pci slots left so I need to get a pci-x1 card.

Am I making the right decision.

Hmm in your shoes:
if your current amp is working good, as far as entry level vintage amps goes it was rather decent but if u are looking for better sound perhaps look to get better speakers 1st?

It depends on what you need. If you want to expand in the future get the receiver. You could have speakers in another room as well and play music off them from your computer.
