what is my memory speed - cpu-z

Thread Starter
I have read dozens of threads related to 'what is my memory speed' and this is still confusing. One thread said double the CPU speed on the memory tab; another said to multiply base clock by the multiplier and then double, and another had some other 'recipe; and now I found one that said, don't look at the memory tab - look at the SPD tab

I was running 16GB Corsair CMX8GX3M2A2000CP <8GB dual channel 2000Mhz OC CL9> and to see what happens I changed to 8GB Kingston KHX2400C11D3K4/8GX <8GB Quad channel 2400Mhz CL11>. I use Autocad Civil 3D and faster memory seems to improve performance a lot and it seems like the extra 8GB is not used, so logically I thought 'lets go faster' with less memory.

The system is and AMD Phenom II X4 975 clocked to 3.9Ghz and an ASUS AM3 M4A87TD board.

Without changing the BIOS from what worked with the Corsair memory, this is what I got from the Kingston http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2425864

390

390

The Corsair ran nice like this http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=2297113

I have no real clear idea what speed my memory is running at but with AutoCAD C3D it had the best 'feel' with faster timings at the expense of total speed.

Unless I am missing something obvious, take the DRAM frequency and double it. That is your memory speed. DDR = DoubleDataRate. So, your speed is 1020MHz.

Here's mine at 1866MHz:

The easiest way to adjust your memory speed is by changing the memory multiplier. What you refer to as the FSB is actually called the reference clock on AMD platforms. Changing the reference clock will overclock every component in your system, so it is better to try using the memory multiplier first.

Since you are running a Deneb based Phenom CPU you will most likely not be able to achieve the full speed that your ram is rated for because the built in memory controllers for those CPU series can very rarely handle memory above 1866.

You should not worry about this though, in the vast majority of programs and games the benefits of ram above 1600 mhz is near zero.

AMD's APU IGP do benefit from faster RAM though....
Once again...

Yes this is true, but in the case of this guys CPU the faster memory would only bring very small improvements, even if it could be ran at its rated speed.

Thank you - this thread just explained it and now I understand. Yes, the memory will probably be utilized 80% but that is intentional and should provide stability; the Corsair crashes every couple days when set above 1600mhz. - usually and inconveniently during a skype meeting.

For a first try I set the BIOS to auto and got this 2425964.png

Next I can 1) try the ASUS auto tune or 2) play around with the settings to see what will work at 2000Mhz and then try the other end at 1100Mhz and see if CL5 will hold, and 3) do this the right way and follow a process to retune the entire machine one setting at a time (probably a different day when there is more time).

Try raising the CPU-NB voltage a bit. You will be safe up to 1.5 v, but you should stay under 1.35 to keep the heat manageable. As I stated before though, Phenom II series CPU's have a lot of trouble getting memory above 1800 Mhz due to the integrated memory controllers on them not being very strong.

This +1, especially because you have a Deneb chip and not a Thuban. the IMC on Thubans is stronger.
