GTX460 Folding Help

Thread Starter
I have 2 GTX460s, both are folding and I'm having some issues with one of them. One is OCed to 850MHz and is folding away at about 14k PPD, but the other is OCed to 900MHz and is only putting up about 10k - 11k PPD. I'm just wondering what could cause this. I've been folding both of these GPUs for about a year, and both were posting about the same PPD, but recently, the PPD on one dropped off significantly. Both are getting the same WUs (mostly 8008 and 8009) but I'm confused as to why the one that is OCed higher is posting fewer points.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You could have heat throttling as it is the summer time now.

It is not throttling, I've watched the GPU-Z as it is working and it does not throttle down. It shows a steady 900MHz. When it throttles down it drops to 405MHz, but it hasn't been doing this. Actually, since I put the 570 in the system (which is water cooled), the temp on the 460 that is down in points has actually dropped about 10C since it no longer has the other GTX460 dumping heat into the case.

Not anymore...

They were in the same computer, my 2700k rig, and were netting about the same points (about 14k PPD), then I pulled one out and put it in my 3570k rig and put a GTX570 in its place, then the one I kept in the 2700k rig suddenly dropped in PPD.

So basically, the only change I have made was taking out a GTX460 and replacing it with a GTX570, other than that, the GPU that has dropped in points has not changed at all. The one that has dropped in points is still in the same system it was in before and in the same slot, the only change is the card in the other slot is now a 570 instead of the other 460.

The 460 that was moved into the 3570 build is still getting about the same PPD that it did before, which is ~14k.

Let me know if that doesn't make sense, its kinda complicated.

Well from this we can say that it's likely not the graphics card....what's different in the new rig? upload times perhaps, is it on wifi? Could it be RAM issues? Are the flags set the same? CPU cores tasked equally, or CPU affinity not set correctly?

First off, I know its not upload times as it is showing my HFM as 10k PPD and it doesn't look like it is taking more than a minute to upload completed WUs.

Flags are the same, I'm using Tracker V2 on both rigs, no flags set. Also, the 460 that is getting lower points is in a rig that is wired to my router, the other is connected wirelessly. As for any other changes, the only things I changed on the rig were swapping out a GTX460 for a GTX570 and adding a 360 rad to the water loop. Nothing else in the system has changed.

As for RAM issues, I also fold the CPU in this rig in a VM (which has the affinity set to "Low") and I haven't seen any RAM issues there. Also, I have not changed the RAM since this card was producing 14K PPD, so I don't think that is likely the problem.

I'll check the core affinity tonight, but I haven't changed it from what is set stock in Tracker V2. I might try switching over to the v7 client and see if I get different results. I have the v7 client set up on the computer, I just prefer the Tracker V2 for its ease of use.

Lastly, i do have the card shut down right now, but I'll fire it back up tonight and take a look at all these things.

Is the 570 folding also? How big/old is the power supply on the computer with the slow 460?

I am assuming that when you pulled the 460 and replaced with the 570 and wiped and reinstalled the drivers again.

OK, the 570 is folding as well, the PSU is an OCZ ZX Series 850 that I bought about 2 months ago. As for the drivers, yes, I wiped the drivers and installed the 290.53 drivers at the suggestion of a friend. Could it be that this driver is playing well with the GTX570 (which is netting about 19k PPD), but not the GTX460?

Here's a screen shot to show you what I have going on:

I had two 460s folding at the same time once before and it worked fine for me, using the 290.53 "international beta" drivers (which I still use and swear by thumb.gif).

Only thing I can think of is that the VM is slowing it down. I tried to set up a VM for my CPU when I only had one 460 folding and it lowered my PPD by a couple thousand. But maybe that was just me not setting it up right...

Yeah, I've had this problem with VirtualBox, and found that it was because VB standard priority level is set to Normal, which allows the folding client to take all the CPU clocks without regard to what else is running on the system. I manually set the priority of VB to Low to keep this from happening.

As for the drivers, someone here on OCN recommended the 290.53 driver to me months ago (may have been you, jetpak) and they have worked great, but I just can't figure out this issue.
