OK people like me who use your computer for more then gaming and file sharing, i use my computer for lots and lots of Media. I watch lots of Videos and listen to lots of music. So i did some testing on my computer to see which media player is truley the best in terms of performance and ease of use or easy on installation.
Testing Done On:
AMD 3200+
Nvidia 7900 gs PCIE
Soundblaster Live Audigy 2 zs
Where To Download:
Windows Media Player
Comes with Windows
VLC Media Player
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
DivX Media PLayer
http://www.divx.com/
Ok now onto the comparisons:
VLC
Pros: Free
Great Power Uses Less CPU
You dont need to install the files can be run out of a folder.
Cons: No Skins
Comes with basic Codecs
Windows:
Pros: Also Free
Has websurfing abilities
Has many Skins
Cons: Has lots of bugs when installing more codecs.
Has Major Issues with little chaneg in codecs.
Divx:
Pros: Comes with the best codec which is Divx
Free
Cons: Takes a Long load time
Has some spyware(easily removed)
Uses Alot of CPU
But all of them are basically the same except for few minor things.
Onto my tests
Each Test Was taken Twice to average Usuage)
My next pictures is all 3 running same time with the same video playing.

Things to look for is the Memory Usage And Cpu usage
These next few Are each Media Player Individually Playing All the same video.:
VLC:

Divx:

Windows Media:

OK ONE FINAL THING TO NOTE: In Divx there is an option to enable onboard video decoding for ATI boards only, and i hear this is suppose to take away some CPU usage but i can not test this seeing how i dont have an ATI system.
Final Note:
I use VLC media player everyday it seems, i tryed windows and divx but out of all three i give VLC a huge thumbs up. It has no problems with new codecs, or anything. But it is the best and most versatile media program i have seen. It can survive death tests such as playing Counter Strike source and listening to music and still play the video without a hint of trouble.
