More subscription services like Battlefield 3 Premium sound like a good deal to EA Labels president Frank Gibeau, according to a GamesIndustry International interview. Gibeau said the one-time purchase subscription for current and upcoming Battlefield 3 downloadable content could lead to similar deals for other EA properties.
EA wants to sell you more stuff for your pre-existing stuff.
"We actually think our Premium service exceeds what Elite does--from a value standpoint, from a content standpoint, and longer term we think that we can bring more properties into that offering and that'll be great for the business," Gibeau said. While EA had considered the service before the game's launch, it took additional time to prepare, he said.
"This is an industry where people have a lot of oneupsmanship and if somebody innovates, you match it or you exceed it."

So,what say you, does this means we can expect EVEN more rip-offs and milkage from EA in the future?
Discuss...

No offense, but, it's not just EA doing this.

Isn't every MMO ever made (big titles at least) subscription based?
Activision went this route too.

Technically, I wouldn't call BF 3 Premium a subscription; it was a one-time fee. That tag stuck in my throat for a while, I admit, but in the end I bought it. I was gonna buy all the DLC anyway so: Why not?

I'd love free DLC just as much as you guys but, those days are gone. Over. Finished. Or so it seems.

* I voted with my wallet and didn't buy MW3 and---it still broke every entertainment sales record known to man. So, yeah.... *

I'm having a blast in BF3 so, EA got my money. Simple. I don't even think of Premium as a sub; I see it as DLC pre-order...with a shiny new box cutter to boot rolleyes.gif

I never commented on BF3 Premium...
I would even call it a fairly good deal,it does offer a nice amount of content. But now when it sold well,it is highly possible the EA will continue heavily pursuing such strategy, and make many similiar DLC deals, only more overpriced with time, and offering less content, ultimately ending as a bunch of rip-offs...

I would say with EA,it goes something like this:
They release a good game/service/idea,whatever...
The consumers are happy at first, and the idea is succesful...
EA notices the success, and continues pursuing that idea, but with time, degrading it into a rip-off,and a consumer unfriendly milkage...
I expect the same will happen here, this will soon degrade into something bad, more EA games with cut out content sold later for unfair prices...

Yeah, you're right. I was just pointing that out because, as you see, EA has a bad rep--rightly justified in some instances. "Milking"? Sure; but, they are just following the rest of the industry that's been "milking" for a while now.

I'll pay for good content and, as buggy as BF3 is, it's the best shooter out right now--hands down--in my book. (Personal opinion.) So I subscribed/pre-ordered for the future DLC, however you want to look at it.

EA discussions tend to get pretty radical pretty fast around here. thumb.gif

Soon as EA goes full sub (if they ever do) I'm done. Out. I'll be getting ARMA III, too so, I'll have that next up.

Good post. Keep 'em coming.

more good games ruined by ea..battlefield 3 is probably my last buy from EA -.-....
seriously, i wouldn't even be mad if they sold actual dlcs..but the stuff they sell seems like stuff the rip out of the game and sell later for more profit, take mass effect for example..they probably planned to sell a real ending dlc before the massive outcry..
and they've definitely turned dice into poo
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/241306/dice-well-never-charge-for-battlefield-maps/

another great studio ruined..
i hope EA goes bankrupt-.-

take premium for example
b2k owners and preordered players gets ripped out of 15 bucks..since there is no option for premium with b2k, players are effectively forced to buy b2k twice if they want premium.. so much for we will support our loyal fanbase..more like taking a huge steamy dump on your most loyal fans..

oh ya..to add insult to injury..pay to unlock? are you kidding me? i bought a game, i didn't download a free mmorpg..this isn't battlefield play4free pay2win so why in the world should people be able to buy advantages?jesus christ..

Yeah,I agree that the gaming industry as a whole is quickly getting into the "milking" bussiness, but EA pioneers most of the anti-consumer strategies, hence my dislike for them. For example,my currently biggest issue in the industry, dumbing down games for "wider audiences",and ignoring loyal and original fanbases, can easily be linked directly to EA...

But true,if you like BF3,and play it often,I would call this "Premium" a good deal, you do get a nice amount of content, but as I said before,I'm concerned that with time, these DLC "subscriptions" won't be such good deals anymore, only rip-offs,filled with cut content from games. This is purely opinion based by my experiences with EA,so I obviously may be wrong, but often,I turn up right with my predictions about EA...

Oh,and BTW,thanks for the rep smile.gif

Soon all games will be released without weapons and costumes. Example, resident evil 7, the main character will be only wearing undies and a knife, thats it.

Want a pistol? DLC
want a shotgun? DLC
want a rifle? DLC
want clothes? DLC?

I miss the old days that you can unlock extra stuffs by just completing the game, by typing a passwork, certain button combinations (UP, UP, DOWN, DOWN, X, B, A, Y, UP, BACK, DOWN, FORWARD, DOWN, ANYONE?)

Problem with this is you're not protected against crappy DLC releases. Also no discount if you already purchased DLC packs is just another indicator that they dont care about their current customers, only getting new ones. It's not even about the money for most people, it's about the douchey treatment.

I've got a hard rule: never buy a game or DLC that scores below a 78 -or- if there's a wide discrepancy between pro and user scores. Close quarters is a 72/6.6 stinker that's barely worth $5... at that rate EA is going to have to crank out a lot of DLC to make the $50 worthwhile for me. They still haven't fixed a lot of problems with the game, no reason to think they'll suddenly start putting together great DLC.

The problem with Premium service guns: If the guns they release are really awesome and own everything, non-premium users will stop playing. If the guns they release are just like all the guns already in the game, this negates even having the premium service guns in the first place. Either way someone gets screwed by the tiered service.

Opinion noted.

But here's just how I see it.

1) I'll take a "bad" or "crappy" BF3 DLC pack over anything MW3 puts out. And I sure won't be buying Treyarch's rehash of BF 2142 ala BlOps 2.

2) Buy the packs separately; buy only the ones that interest you--after watching videos on them and getting feedback. Guaranteed they'll go on sale after a while. Just like BF3 did, just like B2K did.

3) No previous BF game has ever been perfect from all the countless posts I've read regarding them. And apparently (from the vets) BF3 is actually getting a ton more support than any of the older games.

4) There is no problem with any "Premium" guns, because, they are no "Premium" guns. Each map pack/DLC (individually) will come with new guns/assignments. The only thing Premium got that CQB buyers didn't get is the lame-o box cutter and 1 cammo for each class. There is zero advantage with Premium other than the Queu Jumping which I totally disagree with, think it's totally disrespectful.

What I still don't understand about the BF3 'Premium' is this -

People paid $50 for a combo-package of DLC content which were promised, some with specific dates, others with absolutely no date and only a year given, and yet it's literally just maps and guns.

So.. what takes so long to develop maps, vehicles, and guns? Seriously? I don't get it at all. I can see vehicles and guns maybe taking some extra time to code into the game but I don't get it with the maps.

It's not like they're adding another campaign to the single-player story line.
