Edit: Wait, I'm sorry. The fast time for boot is only because of the hybrid hibernate system, isn't it?
I'm actually not even talking about using hibernate, I'm talking about cold boot into Windows.

I have a prediction that the lack of sales is going to push MS to make some big changes to it with SP1 as in either reenabling the traditional desktop or opening it to 3rd party enabling (like it was before the latest beta release). But for MS to go to a drastic step of already decreasing the price of an upgrade to 1/3 of what it normally is means that they're panicking IMHO.

I'd like to see a 7 second boot time from complete power off to surfing the web like you stated. Post a video for all of us to see (I'll believe it when I see it). As for your "slow" Win7 boot time even before my SSD I never had cold boot times that slow.

My slow boot time into Windows 7 includes time from startup to actual internet use, including time to recognize the wireless driver and time for Google Chrome to start. It's much faster in Windows 8. I'll post a video once I find a camera to borrow.

7 seconds huh?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ne0D8S1VVzE

Win 8 = 34 seconds
Win 7 = 54 seconds

I don't see 7 seconds anywhere.

I don't see 7 seconds in my post either. rolleyes.gif
Nonetheless, Windows 8 is significantly faster than Windows 7 in boot times.

I'm sorry, but I've been irked by this line of logic for the past few years.

Every time a new BIOS (and now UEFI) revision comes out for a motherboard, a new update or release for their operating system, a new hard drive (or SSD)...

everybody tries to validate it despite whatever flaws it has with the same absurd argument: "It boosts faster!"

Perhaps I should introduce you all to this magical thing called Windows DOS. Instant boots off a ~100kbps floppy drive powered by a Pentium Pro with 16MB RAM.

Does anyone here use Windows 8 for anything other than booting their computer? It seems like the debate about the merits of the new OS in this thread is solely around the boot time.

Don't be naive and think Microsoft is trying to do us a favor
Wrong, Windows 8 is only just a fork of Windows 7 with advances in software technology. Instead this time Microsoft took Windows 7 and stripped it naked, and said "how can we make this run on a cell phone?". Take note how both the Developer Preview and Consumer Preview still ran a Windows 7 core. Even with a fully functional Metro interface. This is because WinRT is a added on API. Essentially what has been done is they took Windows 7, polished it more then probably any future service pack will. Then added in the new WinRT API and the Metro platform. So everybody out there saying Windows 8 will suck? well your horribly wrong. It will be the best performing and all around the best Windows that Microsoft has released to date. And at $40 an pop, they will make a fortune off the upgrades alone. Given the short amount of time they have been working on this OS.

The fact that you can't think of any other reason about why they would be using this pricing method other than "they're panicking IMHO" shows lack of business sense in your thought process.
