[Windowsteamblog] Upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $39.99 - Page 19

To be honest, I like Windows 8, so far...

Pretty fast.

I upgraded from a cluttered version of Windows 7 with all my files, and now it's pretty fast.

The interface is pretty simple and friendly. less clicks.

BUT

My Metro Tiles aren't working. They open and say "preview" and it closes.

I tried installing new drivers, doing the UAC gimmick, everything...

Windows 8 is designed for very few simultaneous tasks. In W7 and previous, you can place your windows anywhere you want, maximizing screen real estate usage.

Its not that the way W8 does it with the metro apps is bad, its that its made to look good first and foremost. It docks everything and the apps themselves are designed to be docked, which is good. But it limits you to a few applications. And yes I know that there still is a desktop in W8 but they will most likely keep half-ass support for it compared to the metro UI.
Oh yes, I definately agree about metro apps, I'm not fond of how they work with the desktop. I think they need to be available in windowed form or something, I'm not entirely sure, but it feels a bit disjoint as-is.

But then, I've only been using Windows 8 with desktop apps (just like I use Win 7) and in that respect there's no difference as far as multitasking.

W8 Lover: Doesn't bother me. You must be doing it wrong trolololol

Absolutely agree.

I love how if you don't like it you're "just jumping on the bandwagon and haven't even used it". The simple fact is that many of us have gone through the trouble to install it and just simply don't like the metro interface which in my and many other's opinion is great as a tablet or touchscreen interface and yet not nearly as intuitive for many of us as the traditional desktop interface. W8 lovers response "well...you just haven't spent enough time with it" or "you're just not doing it right". The simple truth is that there are many of us who have tried it and have ligitimate reasons for that. Lowering the price to $39 is a nice try but it's still not enough to make us move from a perfectly functional OS that is intuitive to use and familiar.

So, there's absolutely no customization of the size of the Metro UI? (I don't have an ssd and I doubt my laptop can support it without losing my main drive) I don't like the full screeness of the whole start page, but like being able to pin everything to the start menu/search whatever I need on it. My main beef with 7 is how wasteful Aero is on battery :/. How big is the Preview download?

ONLY if you purchase a new desktop or laptop AFTER June 2 2012. When Win 7 rolled out they did the same thing if you purchased a vista desktop or laptop......except you got Win 7 for free.

That wasn't how I interpreted it, but thanks for clarifying. Sucks, guess I won't get it then. $40 is too much for the horrible game compatibility Windows 8 CP currently provides.
