'sup guys,
My uncle asked me how much a new rig would cost him and I could only reply with this question: "what do you need from a computer right now".
Well, my cousins will play games on this rig and it will also contain work from my uncle and should handle everyday use like it's nothing.

He didn't tell me about it yet, but he's definitely on a budget (most people are, so it would be great if you could adapt to this small fact). I'm not looking for a +€1000 build, I just need your opinion/advice on some parts to keep the price admirably low and the system most likely decent ;D.

(all prices are BTW inclusive). Standard cooling - no overclocking preferred

  • CPU:
    • Intel:
      1. i5-2320 (Sandy, 1155): € 179,90, quad, 3000Mhz std clock -- note to self: alternate
      2. i5-3450 (Ivy, 1155): € 188,80, quad, 3100Mhz std clock, 3500Mhz turbo clock -- note to self: tones
      3. i5-3550 (Ivy, 1155): € 199,90, quad, 3300Mhz std clock, 3700Mhz turbo clock -- note to self: alternate
      4. if you're like 'woa duude, you're own rig made you blind for mid-range, cheaper products' , welcome to show me what you got then ;p
    • AMD (never used AMD, but their BD CPUs seem pretty good for casual non-OC stuff?)
      1. FX-4100 (Zambezi, AM3+): € 118,90, quad, 3600Mhz std clock, 3800Mhz turbo clock -- note to self: tones
      2. FX-6100 (Zambezi, AM3+): € 139,90, hexa, 3300Mhz std clock -- note to self: tones
      3. FX-8120 (Zambezi, AM3+): € 169,90, octa, 3100Mhz std clock, 4000Mhz turbo clock -- note to self: alternate
      4. if you're again like 'woa duude, you're own rig made you blind for mid-range, cheaper products' , most likely welcome to show me what you got then ;p
  • Mobo (looking for itx and µAtx, Atx is arguable and oh, WLAN isn't a must but it's very welcome):
    • Intel: there's so much choice frown.gif, halp. ASrock small form factors are very cheap for what they can do smile.gif, or am I being foolish here? redface.gif
    • AMD: ASUS Sabertooth TUF 990FX: € 159.90, it's got more than they will ever need for 'cheap' (welcome to adjust my choice here) -- note to self: tones
  • GPU: come at me bro, I know all about them, I just wouldn't be able to make a clear minded judgement because of my love for the gtx580. I'd say a card under €250 with 1-2Gb of VRAM will do, hope someone doesn't mind pointing a few towards me? ty wink.gif
  • Case: something that's not too big (no high towers, just, no.), quality, silent air flow (keep in mind: stock build) and pleasing for the eye. µAtx ( and maybe itx, not sure) and atx form factors are just fine.
  • RAM: 1600Mhz, cl9, 8Gb (2 modules of 4Gb), agreeably cheap -> again, point out some products with pros and cons and I should be able to cut the doubt. (this also reveals my favor toward non-hexacores)
  • PSU: bronze-silver effeciency, 400-500W, not too expensive.

It would be really great to convince my uncle into buying a rig like this, he's been stuck on HP family rigjunk for years.
Thanks for the info if it provided me some good thought about certain parts oh and fanboys, stay away unless you've got valuable arguments, I would like to keep this quick and clean.

I know the bits after the mobo look like they were typed in a rush. Well, they are ;p, was getting tired of looking up all those mobos for lga1155 and didn't feel like looking for anything else anymore either x).

Thanks in advance guys

not really sure how to help exactly.. if you want a build put together, this is something i'd go for;

Intel Core i5-3550
ASRock H77M
8GB Corsair Vengeance CML8GX3M2A1600C9 (2x4GB) DDR3
Sapphire Radeon HD7850 2GB OC
64GB Crucial M4
1TB Western Digital Caviar Blue
Silverstone Strider 500W ST50F-ES
Silverstone TJ08-E

up to you what graphics card you go with as i don't know what games your cousins play, so you can be the judge of that.. but all that's just under $1000AUD.

if you want some general advice..
grab an i5, forget bulldozer
any h61/h77 motherboard
any 8GB kit
a reliable 60/64GB ssd
whatever storage you need
etc. etc.

even though you weren't sure, you hit the spot haha. Let's see what the total price for such a rig will be here in EU smile.gif my cousins won't be playing many modern games except gw2, which doesn't require that much. The other games are older than 1 year (going back to really old stuff tongue.gif)

I'm at €510 right now, not following your setup to the fullest. I think my uncle will be happy about it smile.gif the only thing he will have to decide on his own is the gpu. Thanks for the advice there, rep+

Food for thought...

1) Instead of an H77 how about a Z77-i Deluxe from Asus which gives you the option to upgrade in the future CPU wise from an i2500k to IVY.

2) In terms of case, check out the Bitfenix Prodigy it's actually cheaper than the TJ08-E and gives you more space and the ability to use an ATX PSU as well. biggrin.gif

http://www.overclock.net/t/1261240/bitfenix-com-bitfenix-unleashes-prodigy-itx-case

Here's a review of the case - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=mOi_vbyKLik

At the least, give the Prodigy a look since it's cheaper and will help you lower your cost! thumb.gif

all food for thought is welcome. The Deluxe mobo would indeed be a very fine asset to this cute little rig, but its price is the killer here: €200, while I can get an ASrock Z77 Pro-4M for €104. The only difference to me is that the Asus mobo is leaning towards high-end users and it's got wifi ;p, not sure if that's worth the extra €100 (they will barely use those functions, unless I start OC'ing it myself without them knowing about it xd hehe).

The bitfenix case is quite interesting though. Looks like the biggest µATX case to me tongue.gif. The TJ08-E does support ATX PSU's, when looking at their specs page. This will probably be a matter of availability where I live and personal flavour of my uncle. thanks for the hint! +r

Big, but that's if you include the handles. Internally, not really. I've updated our spec sheet on our website for internal dimensions.

sorry for the missinformation there wink.gif it looks bigger on the pictures with the side panel on tongue.gif and the handles might actually come in handy, guess 'ill compare the dimensions a bit, but in the end, it's my uncle who decides

edit: dayum, that's really tight biggrin.gif really nice case though

I used a german website because it's easy to navigate. I'm sure they import, or you can look for equivalent components in Belgium.

CPU - do not get a Bulldozer if you don't plan to overclock the crap out of it. Since OC'ing doesn't seem to be in the works here, you pretty much want an Intel i3-1200 or an i5-3450. I'd recommend fitting the better i5-3450 into the budget. (175 euro)
http://www1.hardwareversand.de/Socket+1155/56298/Intel+Core+i5-3450+Box%2C+LGA1155.article

Motherboard - you don't need something fancy if you're not overclocking. Motherboards' core functions do NOT get better as they get more expensive as they are all based on the same core chipsets from Intel or AMD. Here's an Asrock B75m (60 euros):
http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?adp=0&aid=59307&agid=1603&apop=1

CPU Cooler - stock intel cooler

GPU - The 6870 below has pretty good power for about 150 euro (152) and it has a decent cooling solution attached. Will run any game out there smoothly, thought many games won't be at maximum settings at 1920x1080 resolution. Has a decent (relatively quiet) cooling solution attached. The next step up would be a 7850 at roughly 250 euro, preferably one of the Sapphire editions with 2 fans.
http://www1.hardwareversand.de/1024+MB/45198/XFX+RADEON+HD+6870+900M+1GB+DDR5+DUAL+DP+HDMI+DUAL+DVI.article

RAM - for intel systems, 1333mhz does you just fine and most budget motherboards can't even run RAM at faster than 1600mhz, so just go for a cheap kit. Here's some G.Skill ValueRAM (37 euro)
http://www1.hardwareversand.de/1333+Low+Voltage/44315/8GB-Kit+G.Skill+PC3-10667U+CL9.article

Case - I dunno which mATX or ITX cases are supposedly quieter than the others, but I do know this is a decent quiet case: Fractal Design r3 (ATX form factor mid-tower). Note the Fractal Design Arc Mini is mATX but not a quiet-designed tower, rather it is high-airflow. (95 euro - quiet costs more)
http://www1.hardwareversand.de/Midi/36381/FRACTAL+DESIGN+Gehäuse+DEFINE+R3+Titanium+Grey.article

PSU - Super Flower Amazon 430w (41 euro)
http://www1.hardwareversand.de/400+-+500+Watts/30074/Super-Flower+Amazon+80Plus+450W.article
be quiet! Pure Power 430w and XFX Core 450w and Antec earthwatts or high current gamer or neo eco brands are also common inexpensive-but-quality power supplies. The Super Flower Amazon has an LED fan, according to the picture. Not sure if you can turn that off. Probably won't show through the case though. Unless you like the bling, lol.

Storage - here is where you decide how expensive you want to be, in terms of general system responsiveness. A standard 1TB HDD is below. If you want your programs to have exceptionally low load times, then you need to buy an SSD big enough to hold them (probably 128gb or 256gb, for similar numbers of euros). Ordinary 1TB HDD (73 euro)

Three different sample SSDs, 120gb,180gb, 256gb:

http://www1.hardwareversand.de/Solid-State-Disk/50248/Crucial+M4+256GB+SSD+%2B+Data+Transfer+Kit+6%2C4cm+(2%2C5).article

DVD-burner - whatever random one (17 euros)
http://www1.hardwareversand.de/S-ATA/49433/Sony+Optiarc+AD-7280S-0B+schwarz.article

Wireless internet - get a USB dongle, preferably one with an extension cord in case you need to hunt for a sweet spot without moving the case around. Better than that - managing to stick with wired ethernet and not bothering. Should be 20 euros or so.

Sample total = 650 euros (plus whatever shipping from Germany \ different tax costs calculated). Build does not include windows, mouse, keyboard, monitor, speakers, optional SSD, or the estimated 20 euro cost of the wireless dongle.

Overall - this tower will handle games for the cousins quite well. Ordinary tasks will indeed not be difficult - but it won't seem lightning fast for casual use without the (expensive) SSD since many casual use tasks have HDD load time as their constraining factor.

thanks for the advice biggrin.gif
  • I've also had thoughts about everything you stated here (except the PSU, there never is a good reason to save money when buying a PSU. PSU dead -> rest might be dead along with it).
These options are probably best to keep when this build would exceed his current budget.
  • I bought an SSD for my own htpc and I noticed that if you keep your system clean (a thing lots of people seem to lack in their systems) that you won't notice that much of a difference, except when accessing lots of data resources or eg, when compressing files. Also, current SSD's are still not what they're supposed to be, they're still in development. One day, their SSD will fail. Might be within a year or two, or maybe 5 years. But it will happen ;o. It also gives a boostb to the price for the rig, so I don't think I'll use one this time :/
  • good idea about the wired usb dongle biggrin.gif didn't think about that honestly tongue.gif
  • oh and about the psu: I am going for HGC, not sure if I didn't state theat yet, prob not (since i did some research hours ago), but yep, it' sbang for buck ;D

thanks again for your opinions/adivce here! it all helps to figure out how many options there are left smile.gif +r
