[TH] AMD Desktop Trinity Update: Now With Core i3 And A8-3870K - Page 14

I thought for TDP, Intel is always conservative and never get close to it whereas AMD is much closer. How else could AMD be selling laptop chips on an inferior process technology and still manage the same TDP as IVB?

thinking.gif

So it is stated in watts, why? Why is this relevant and how is it gauged for market use? How can others heed this specification? In order to utilize this specification, what must one do? What must a manufacturer do in order to ensure they are supplying enough support for a product?

How is one TDP compared to another? One TDP is 65W and the other is 100W, what does this mean? What are the differences? How can we come to a conclusion on their differences and then differentiate the properties of each for comparative reasoning?

What are numbers, why do we use numbers?

(You can continue this pissing match if you want, but keep in mind I agree. Specification is the better term to have used, but mine is not incorrect in the slightest.)

I didn't respond because I didn't really understand the confusion. K processors are marketed for overclocking, likewise they have a larger recommendation/requirement for cooling. With increases in frequency and voltage you increase the amount of energy flowing through a chip. More energy more heat.

Well, the idea was that their TDP doesn't reflect the stock settings, which automatically means TDP ratings aren't very black & white, which is my overall point.

TDPs are not typical, they are worst case scenarios.

They are measured/specified to the lowest common denominator between chip variance. But not worst case scenarios. (excluding K processors which have a higher blanket heat range)

You can very easily produce more heat than a TDP specification with large workloads and small FFT workloads. Think of TDP as a "more than suitable" than "worst case scenario".
