[TH] AMD Desktop Trinity Update: Now With Core i3 And A8-3870K - Page 6

AMD is doing well in the benchmarks; Trinity has been trading blows with the i3.

Things will get really interesting when Piledriver comes out. Ivy Bridge barely moved the target (4-6% performance increase) so it'll really get interesting when we start overclocking (especially since Ivy sucks at o/c).

?did intel release a new hd 4000 driver since ivy bridge was lunched?link please?

He's only talking about x86 performance seeing how Vishera has no iGP.

If Asus make a decent mini - ITX board for these that works well on Linux my i3 web surfer will get the flick - Intel on chip graphics just are not very good . and I believe that an A10 will have all the grunt I need to run a few MP3s play the odd AVI and surf the web whilst fitting in a very small mini ITX case which takes up very little desk space and not making very much noise . The i3 would be fine if I put a video card in but that defeats the purpose of what I wish to do with the machine . I do wish that the A10 put out a little less heat though .
Anyway I will see what boards come out before I start getting rid of what I have . Also how well the new APUs and their chipset are supported in Linux .

so only now, july 2012, can AMD match the performance of an intel cpu released in Q1 2011, with a CPU that has "twice" the cores, 0.7 GHz higher frequency, and more cache. rolleyes.gif all the while using 35w more power
pathetic is an overstatement.

this wouldn't be so ridiculous if they just market their dual-module CPU as a dual-core instead of a quad

All your points are irrelevant other than the 35w more power claim which in unfounded. Who cares if it runs at a different frequency, or has more cores, or they claim however many cores. Are you actually butthurt that their definition of cores is different than yours?

Why do you consistently think that all cores are created equal?

That's like saying all cars use the same size pistons.

EDIT: Why is everyone derailing the thread with discrete graphics hypotheticals, and CPU competitor matching?
EDIT2: Why is this thread focusing on CPU power when the direction is inexpensive gaming applications?

Why were these not included? Is this not the point of APUs?

The point is that AMD apu eats MORE power, but results are similar to Inter i3. Not to mention the release date of i3. If some one wants a basic computer i3 all the way.

If that was his point then fine. But that wasn't his point.

35W higher TDP including a substantial iGPU in the thermal envelope.

Unless you think GPU's add 0W to the requirement of thermal design.

TDP is a horrible gauge to use for power consumption, trust me. I own a bulldozer.
