Help Me fix an OLD Computer for a Scanner at Auto Shop (Family Business) - Page 3

Slot 1, with a slot converter. Either a socket 370 celeron, P2 or P3. 72 pin SDRAM for the memory.
It's an old school PC, and similar machines are typically skip bait these days. Good old 16 bit ISA cards, dating back to the late '80s (they had their debut on the IBM AT as an extension to the original 8 bit slots).
As an OEM from that era, when good PSUs were rare, I'd go looking for a Corsair VX430 to replace it with, that should have the 5v power output needed to run something like that. You want a PSU with a LOT of 5v grunt, as that rail runs almost everything from that time.

Strip it down, look for burned out fans and failed power supply, along with leaking caps on the motherboard.

For LEGO: A VESA bus slot is a 32 bit slot which has that same ISA connector with a second extension on the end with a different pin density, it's a competitor to the original PCI. That's not a Sun made box, because Sun (the computer maker) didn't go x86 until very late in the day. This is a machine built to run a Sun (the car diagnostics machine people) diagnostic machine, it's not a Sun (the computer people) computer.

technically, you could replace the whole motherboard etc, with one that fitted, and had ISA slots. It's not a VESA slot, they were longer, it was like an extra brown connector lined up behind an ISA slot, and was used for graphics - it hooked directly to the CPU in 486 days.

The hard part will be keeping the drivers for the board - they may take some setting up, and i don't know if you'd have the installer software for the card. If you do get this fired back up, I'd be taking a backup of the HDD too, so you have a copy of the drivers. smile.gif

oh, and to diagnose - try one piece of ram at a time in the first slot, just like you would do on a modern machine, and see if it comes to life. If its the CPU thats gone, then you could pick up a slot one CPU, hell, I think i've some laying around in my cupboard if need be. I could post one to you. If you replace the whole board, that would do too, the hard part will be getting a riser board that lines up with the back slots. Also, you should meter out the PSU, check it hasn't crapped out, and check all the connectors are in - the old AT power was TWO connectors, both 6 pin i think - many boards won't run without both plugged in.

The board is a standard intel chipset, probably the i440-BX chipset. Unless it's a P3, in which case it's probably i810/820. But drivers for that era chipset are almost standard in everything.

I meant for the SUN board, as it looks like a custom jobby smile.gif Win 98 would have drivers for the MB. smile.gif

Here - just a thought - Have you tried a known good monitor on this machine? Just to eliminate any monitor problems???

This thread is really a cluster. So far spice003 has been on the ball the most. You really should check out vogons the could spec out the machine in mere seconds just by looking at it. basically it is old PII era stuff with a slocket and some PRE PII era stuff like the ISA expansion card. I see this stuff all the time at work and vogons.

My original CRT that came with this computer stopped working a year ago, and I replaced it with an older LCD and was working fine, I will swap out another monitor just to rule it out for sure.

I am also going to purchase some basic PSU tester today to verify it's not the PSU.

Thanks for actual specifics referenced, I am going to probably start looking for either a Processor, MOBO, or Both. I've seen them for about $30-$130 and I have a $500 budget to work with...

I have a thread going there as well now, and figured I'd try to carry on both and see if anyone else has some good ideas.
