Good deal on used equipment?

Hey guys,

I wanted to get your thoughts as to whether or not I'm getting a good/decent/bad deal on purchasing some of my buddies old equipment.

What I would be getting:

Intel Core i7-960

ASUS Rampage III Extreme

2 x MSI 480 GTX video cards

and 6x CORSAIR Vengeance 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 1600

and I would be giving him one of these:

Intel Core i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E or $570 bucks, however you want to look at it.

Let me also just say that my current system is an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe 2.4GHz, 3 gigs of Kingston RAM, ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus, and an EVGA 275 GTX video card, a system I built 6 or so years ago, excluding the video card. The original video card was a BFG 8800 GTS.

So I know it would be a huge jump for me (or at least I think it would be), but is the price right? Again, I would be buying this stuff from a friend so it's not like I have the option of an i7-2600K or 2500K.

Oh and I primarily use my computer for gaming and misc activities, so I guess that would be something to consider.

What are your thoughts and thank you. redface.gif

Looks pretty decent to me I'd say. The cards alone are probably worth ~$350-400 or so. Sure the i7 isn't brand spanking new but it'll hold up just fine for gaming, which would be a pretty significant boost from your current rig.

The only qualm would be that you are SLI-ing two "old" generation cards, which limits your upgrade path, as well as introduces the negatives of dual card configs (drivers, some games being buggy, etc.). Same with the motherboard. Still, it seems that you are getting the better side here.

The two graphics cards alone are worth around $400 as previously stated. $170 for a great motherboard and a solid processors is a steal. I think it's a good deal and it is definitely a very solid jump for you. The only thing is that those two 480s are going to heat up your room quite a bit. I had a single 470 and that thing liked to put out some heat when it was folding.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'm figuring this isn't a build that I'll be attempting to upgrade since the 1366 socket seems to be fading, if not nearly dead, but rather ride it out for a few years just like I did with my first build. So I'm not too worried about a set upgrade path. As long as it can play the latest games that come out over the next 3-4 years, I'll be pretty happy. My buddy has been using it for the past couple years and hasn't come across a game that challenged the system, even at the highest settings.

You should be fine with that platform. I'm still using the 1156 socket and I just upgraded to an i7 860 (should be arriving soon) and I don't really see it no longer being usable in the near future. People are still running Q6600 and are doing fine.
